The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dispatched a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany to Latvia to gather firsthand information on the circumstances surrounding the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this when he met with the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia at the Ministry earlier today, where he formally conveyed the government’s condolences and briefed them on steps taken so far.

He explained that the embassy-led fact-finding team was deployed promptly, given Germany’s concurrent accreditation to Latvia, and has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.

Mr Ablakwa further revealed that Latvian authorities have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances leading to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death are still ongoing and have not yet been concluded.

As part of efforts to deepen engagement, the Minister said he has formally notified the Latvian government of his decision to travel to Latvia to hold discussions with his counterpart and directly engage investigators handling the case.

He added that his imminent delegation to Latvia will include representatives of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family to ensure their participation in the process.

The Minister also assured the family that the Government of Ghana will engage independent experts to analyse all investigative reports, particularly the expected final report from Latvian authorities, to guide government’s next steps in the interest of justice.

Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability as it works to secure answers and closure for the bereaved family.
