Ghanaian reggae legend and Grammy nominee Rocky Dawuni has responded to criticisms over his receipt of a diplomatic passport, urging detractors to channel their concerns to the government.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Dawuni revealed that the development came as a surprise, stressing that he neither lobbied nor pushed for it.
“There was no prior communication or lobbying. They are all witnesses to our works and international travels. Based on your experience and frequent visits, they might provide it in benefit of the country,” he explained.
The Grammy-nominated artiste emphasized that the recognition reflects his years of promoting Ghana on the international stage, not just through music but also through diplomacy.
Addressing critics, Dawuni was firm:
“Those saying I don’t deserve it, that’s their business. If you have anything to say, go to the government with your disapproval. I am busy working and unconcerned with that.”
He further highlighted his global contributions, including his role as a UN ambassador and headliner of major concerts in Costa Rica and Brazil, as well as his involvement in international legislation processes.
“If you research about me, you’ll know I’m a UN ambassador. I was vetted for that after years of hard work. Is it a passport that is something special? Even a recording academy in Washington met in congress and I was invited for the legislation which has now become an American law. So, if the government wants to facilitate my works, I’m grateful for it,” he stated.
Dawuni also clarified that holding a diplomatic passport does not make him political but rather enables him to better carry out his international engagements on behalf of Ghana.
