A national tragedy beyond words – GIBA reacts to helicopter crash

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians, including two cabinet ministers, in a helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement signed by its president, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, GIBA paid tribute to Hon. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Hon. Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology — both of whom served the nation with distinction and collaborated closely with the media sector, particularly Dr. Boamah during his tenure as Minister for Communications.

Other victims included Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and three military personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

GIBA described the incident as a national tragedy and a “tremendous loss” not only to the bereaved families and government but also to the entire nation.

“We pray for strength, comfort, and healing for the families left behind,” the statement said.

It added that the legacies of the departed leaders will continue to inspire future generations.

GIBA extended its condolences to the President, Parliament, the Ghana Armed Forces, and all Ghanaians during this difficult period of mourning.
