The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency in managing funds raised to support the national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, designating Thursdays as official days for receiving pledges and updating the public.

Speaking at a brief ceremony at the Ministry of Finance in Accra, Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, revealed that all contributions are being paid directly into the official 2026 World Cup Fundraising Account at the Bank of Ghana to ensure strict accountability and proper allocation.

According to him, the centralized arrangement is aimed at guaranteeing that every cedi mobilised is transparently managed and used solely for the preparation of the Black Stars.

The event drew strong support from the corporate sector, with KGL Group leading contributions with GH¢5 million—half of its GH¢10 million pledge. Serene Insurance followed with a GH¢2 million cash donation, in addition to a GH¢20 million insurance package for the team.

Other contributors included Icon Energy and Jewel Energy, each donating GH¢1 million. Erata Motors contributed GH¢200,000, while PayAngel donated GH¢100,000. A private businessman, Alex Okyere of KAF Company Limited, also made a personal contribution of GH¢240,000.

Mr Ampem expressed appreciation to the donors, commending their patriotism and confidence in the national team, noting that such support is vital to Ghana’s World Cup ambitions.

“We are grateful to all of you for your love for the Black Stars. Even though the first two friendly matches did not go well, we remain optimistic that the team will make us proud at the World Cup,” he stated.

He reiterated that all funds lodged at the central bank would be used exclusively for the team’s preparation, underscoring government’s commitment to maintaining public trust.

The fundraising initiative, launched last month by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to raise $30 million to adequately prepare the Black Stars for the global tournament.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has institutionalised weekly engagement sessions to sustain momentum.

“Every Thursday, we will meet here to receive contributions, giving those who are yet to fulfil their pledges the opportunity to do so,” Mr Ampem added, urging more corporate bodies and individuals to support the initiative.
