Government to release GH¢4bn to resume stalled road projects

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to release up to GH¢4 billion to road contractors to facilitate the resumption of stalled infrastructure projects across the country.

The funds will be disbursed in phases and are intended to support contractors who have been idle since the start of the year.

This intervention forms part of government’s broader effort to fast-track development and improve road infrastructure nationwide.

Earlier this year, the government suspended all payments to road contractors to allow for a comprehensive audit of outstanding claims. The audit, initiated in January following the swearing-in of the new administration, aimed to verify and validate the legitimacy of all payment requests.

While the suspension was deemed necessary to ensure accountability, it led to the halt of numerous ongoing road projects, raising concerns among stakeholders and the public.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, assured the public of government’s commitment to completing all critical projects. He cited the Ofankor–Nsawam road as a key priority.

“We will prioritise the Ofankor–Nsawam road and ensure that all contractors receive the necessary support to return to site,” the Minister stated.

He added that the disbursement of funds will restore momentum to projects vital to economic growth and public safety.

Mr. Agbodza also urged contractors to prepare to mobilise quickly once payments are made.

“We are counting on contractors to reciprocate government’s gesture with diligence and speed,” he said.

The announcement has been welcomed by contractors and commuters alike, many of whom have expressed optimism that the move will ease traffic congestion, stimulate economic activity, and enhance connectivity in both urban and rural areas.
