The seven judges nominated by President John Mahama for appointment to the Supreme Court are scheduled to appear before the Appointments Committee of Parliament from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
This follows a referral by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to the Committee for consideration and report, in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. The referral was made during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, May 27.
Speaker Bagbin also tasked the leadership of the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to assist the Appointments Committee in the vetting process.
The vetting will assess the nominees’ qualifications, experience, and judicial philosophies to determine their suitability for the highest court in the land.
The nominees, recommended by the President on April 29, 2025, are:
Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
Justice Senyo Dzamefe
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
Justice Philip Bright Mensah
Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
The nominations have drawn criticism from some quarters, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) describing the move as a veiled attempt to push a “third-term political agenda.”
Despite the controversy, the vetting is expected to proceed as scheduled, with the committee likely to deliver its report before Parliament rises for recess.
