The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has expressed grave concern about the increasing influx of illegal firearms and ammunition into Ghana, warning that the proliferation of unregistered and untraceable weapons poses a significant threat to national security.
Speaking during a working visit to the Northern Region on Wednesday, May 21, the Minister revealed that the number of unauthorized firearms in civilian possession has reached alarming levels.
“The number of arms in the hands of our citizens is getting out of control. It’s becoming a major headache for the Peace Council, the police, and other security agencies,” he stated.
“At the least provocation, you hear a gunshot. How are people getting access to these weapons?”
The Asawase MP decried the growing incidents of indiscriminate gunfire and emphasized the urgent need to register all firearms currently in circulation to aid in tracking and ensure accountability.
He called for a nationwide collaborative effort, stressing that government alone cannot address the issue effectively. He also advocated for the deployment of modern technology to monitor the importation and distribution of arms.
“Let’s get private partners involved. Technology is readily available—we can use it to detect who is importing and distributing these weapons. The time to act is now, to make our country safer,” the Minister concluded.
