The Prisons Hospital in Nsawam has successfully conducted a nationwide surgical outreach programme, providing specialised medical care to inmates drawn from several prison establishments across Ghana.
A total of 59 inmates brought together from 7 correctional facilities, including Ho, Ankaful Annex, Ankaful Maximum, Koforidua Local Prison, Senior Correctional Centre (SCC), James Camp, and Nsawam Male Prison, benefited from the exercise.

According to the Medical Director of the Prisons Hospital, Nsawam, CSP Dr. L. K. Acheampong, all surgical procedures were carried out only after thorough medical assessments, detailed patient briefings, and the signing or thumbprinting of consent forms by the inmates.
He explained that the outreach formed part of ongoing efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare within correctional facilities and ensure that inmates receive timely medical attention regardless of their location.

The inmates are currently receiving post-operative care under strict Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols to support recovery and prevent complications.
Despite logistical challenges, including limited accommodation space and shortages of toiletries and personal items for some patients, the exercise was successfully executed.
Management of the Prisons Hospital commended the medical team and all stakeholders whose support contributed to the success of the outreach programme, describing it as a significant step in strengthening inmate healthcare delivery across the country.
