Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has praised his players for their determination and tactical discipline following their dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars secured all three points at BMO Field in Toronto thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi, who emerged as the hero on a night when Panama controlled significant periods of the contest.
The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder struck in the fifth minute of added time, finishing from close range after Brandon Thomas-Asante spearheaded a swift counterattack and delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area.
Despite Panama’s dominance for large spells, Ghana remained disciplined and eventually capitalised on their opportunity to snatch a dramatic victory.
Reflecting on the performance, Queiroz acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents and revealed that his side had anticipated a difficult encounter.
“First half was to suffer against a great team. They know how to play, they know how to do things. We knew, we knew that they would control the game,” the 73-year-old said.
“But step by step, this was our strategy. To let them come and start to make the control, control, control, until we scored. Because this is the way to win,” he added.
The victory leaves Ghana second in Group L behind England, who began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.
The Black Stars now shift their focus to two crucial group-stage fixtures, beginning with a showdown against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding the group phase against Croatia on June 27.
Having secured an important opening victory, Ghana will be aiming to build momentum and reach the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
