Former Ghana captain, Charles Akonnor, has weighed in on concerns surrounding Ghana’s goalkeeping situation following the Black Stars’ 1-0 win over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he said decisions made by the technical team should be respected, as they have access to information fans may not be aware of.
“I think you don’t know, and I also might not know what happens in the camp. The coach knows when to make changes,” he said.
Akonnor noted that public complaints and discussions about selection are part of football and can help technical handlers make better decisions.
“All these things are good signs. Once fans are making complaints, it goes to the ears of the head coach, and he looks at it and takes decisions,” he explained.
He stressed that football involves everyone, including fans, coaches, and stakeholders.
“Football is not for one person. The fans and everyone are part of it,” he added.
According to him, goalkeeping decisions are particularly sensitive and rarely changed without strong reasons.
“This area is very sensitive. Hardly will you see a team bring a goalkeeper in and take him out immediately. We don’t know exactly why it happened,” he noted.
However, he maintained that the most important thing is Ghana’s victory, adding that the coaching staff will continue to review their decisions.
“We have come out with a win, and it means the decisions they took worked. The coach will look at the areas that need improvement and move forward,” he said.
Akonnor also praised Ghana’s tactical discipline, especially their ability to defend without the ball.
“What they did well was how they played without the ball. They were very intelligent, and that is a good sign for the team,” he stated.
He expressed optimism that the team will improve in their next match as they continue to adjust and build momentum.
“I am sure they will look at the improvements needed. The next game they will be stronger, tougher, and better prepared,” he added.
Ghana sealed a 1-0 win over Panama after a stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi, assisted by Brandon Thomas-Asante, in the 95th minute.
