President John Dramani Mahama has shared humorous anecdotes from his marriage to First Lady Lordina Mahama, advising men to avoid unnecessary arguments with their spouses and to prioritise peace and mutual respect in their relationships.
Speaking at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God Men’s Ministry Day on Saturday, August 2, 2026, the President recounted an important lesson he learned during the couple’s 30th wedding anniversary celebration.
According to him, while meeting with a pastor to reflect on their three decades of marriage, Lordina Mahama jokingly claimed that their marriage had survived largely because of her patience and commitment.
“So at thirty years of marriage, we said happy anniversary. After church, we went to the pastor’s office and were talking about thirty years of marriage. And Lordina said, ‘Ah, I’ve done well in this marriage. But for me, this marriage would have collapsed long ago. John, I have been patient with you. Without me, which woman would marry you?'” he recounted.
President Mahama said he initially challenged the assertion, insisting that he had also played an equally important role in sustaining the marriage.
“And as a foolish young man, I said, ‘What? It is rather me. I am the patient one who has held this marriage.’ We were arguing and arguing. Then someone came and called me aside and said, ‘Now what kind of useless argument are you having? This argument you can never win, so stop.’ And I did,” he said, drawing laughter from the congregation.
The President said he took that advice to heart and approached a similar situation differently during another wedding anniversary celebration.
He recalled that when Lordina once again credited herself for the success of their marriage, he chose not to argue but instead acknowledged her sacrifices.
“At our 32nd anniversary or so, we were in the same office and Lordina said, ‘Pastor, you see, I have done well, taken good care of this man, given him children too.’ She looked at me, and I said, ‘It’s true, you made this marriage work. Thank you, Lordina, and God bless you.’ She looked at me in surprise,” he said.
Using the personal experiences to encourage married couples, President Mahama urged men to treat their wives with dignity, respect and understanding, adding that humility often helps preserve peace in a marriage.
He noted that disagreements are inevitable but should not be allowed to damage relationships.
“Sometimes, even when I know I didn’t do anything wrong, I’ll just say, ‘I’m sorry, Lordina.’ And you get your peace, and the marriage continues. We should learn to respect and show dignity,” he advised.
The President’s remarks were met with applause and laughter from the congregation as he encouraged couples to build strong and enduring marriages through patience, forgiveness and mutual respect.
