The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has imposed on-the-spot fines of GH¢1,000 each on several food vendors operating at Rawlings Park for failing to suspend their businesses during the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.
The vendors were sanctioned after the Assembly’s enforcement team found them selling food despite directives requiring all businesses within the area to temporarily close and participate in the monthly sanitation campaign.
The enforcement exercise forms part of the AMA’s efforts to ensure strict compliance with sanitation by-laws and promote active participation in initiatives aimed at improving environmental cleanliness in the capital.
According to the Assembly, the fines are intended to discourage traders and business operators from flouting directives issued during National Sanitation Day activities.
The AMA stressed that the success of the clean-up exercise depends on the cooperation of residents, traders and other stakeholders in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
The National Sanitation Day initiative is designed to promote proper waste management, improve hygiene standards and reduce indiscriminate dumping of refuse through regular community clean-up exercises.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing sanitation regulations and warned that individuals and businesses that fail to comply with future directives would face similar sanctions.
