“Man must eat so we are changing our style,” a desperate middleman at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said.
Nana Yaw Oti Boateng said the introduction of the smart card driving license has affected their work immensely.

As a means to make ends meet, he said they have also decided to go digital as middlemen popularly referred to as ‘Goro boys’.
As an immediate measure, Mr Boateng said the ‘Goro boys’ at the DVLA office at 37 in Accra have opened offices to assist people register online.
“We no longer stand at the entrance of the DVLA office to look for customers; we now have an office with computers and we help our clients fill their forms,” he stated on Y’asem Nie, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Wednesday.

This strategy, he said has tripled their revenue and has also improved their relationship with management of DVLA.
“Eight percent of the ‘Goro boys’ are very educated so many of the clients prefer to come to our office than going to the DVLA,” he added.
He said plans are far advanced to make them agents of DVLA to ensure their work is formalised and serve as a check on swindlers who will infiltrate the system to give them a bad name.

“We have met with the Director of DVLA and he is considering our proposal,” Mr Boateng stated.
