National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communicator, Bernard Anim Piesie, has questioned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) criticism of President John Mahama’s use of a helicopter to assess the extent of flooding in Accra, asking if they expected him to swim through the floodwaters.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Anim Piesie said the President must be commended for the measures being put in place to address the disaster.

“President Mahama must be commended for the measures he is putting in place,” he stated.

He urged the NPP to exercise restraint in their comments and stop politicising the floods.

“The NPP must exercise restraint. I have heard them questioning why Mahama sat in the helicopter to assess the flood. Were they expecting him to swim in the floods for the assessment? Because he was able to see everything that was happening,” he said.

Mr. Anim Piesie called for an end to the politicisation of national disasters.

“It will be good if we stop politicising these issues,” he added.

He also took a swipe at the previous NPP administration, saying they had ample resources to tackle flooding but failed to deliver.

“The NPP left office a few months back. They had a lot of funds to tackle flooding, but what did they do? The GARID project and all, we didn’t see anything. So, is this the point Ghana has gotten to? If they have no solutions, they should keep quiet,” he said.

The comments come as the country continues to deal with the aftermath of heavy rains that caused widespread flooding in Accra and other parts of southern Ghana, displacing thousands and destroying properties.

President Mahama has since released GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund for relief and mitigation efforts.
