For S3fa, the beginning of her music career was far from the usual industry story. There was no elaborate audition, no record label meeting or a carefully mapped-out plan.
Instead, it started with a simple Instagram message she received while sitting in a lecture hall.
The singer has opened up about how a DM from rapper and entrepreneur D-Black unexpectedly changed the direction of her life while she was still a student.
She recalled being in class when she received the notification. Unsure whether the account was genuine, she showed it to her lecturer for confirmation. After checking the verified account, her lecturer confirmed that the message was indeed from the rapper.
D-Black had told her he had come across a video of her singing and was interested in having her join a new record label he was planning with DJ Breezy.
S3fa said the opportunity caught her by surprise, but with her mother’s encouragement, she decided to take the chance and see where it would lead.
Her first visit to the studio, however, was anything but comfortable.
S3fa recounted walking into a room filled with artistes she had never met before and quickly became nervous. She was also the only woman in the group, making the unfamiliar environment even more intimidating.
She was then asked to record a song with Epixode. Although she was new to the professional studio environment, the experienced artistes around her helped her settle in and find her confidence.
What was initially an introduction to the studio gradually became an unofficial audition. S3fa’s vocal ability impressed the people around her, and the attention shifted from simply testing her abilities to discussing the possibility of signing her.
That moment eventually became the beginning of her professional music journey.
Looking back, S3fa remains full of gratitude for D-Black who propelled her into the limelight, even as she ends her contract with his record label.
