Starting a new academic year in Ghana’s rural cocoa-growing communities is often marked by stress rather than excitement, as hundreds of Junior High School students face severe shortages of basic learning materials.
In districts across the Assin, Twifo, and Tepa areas, the high cost of essential supplies leaves many farming families struggling to equip their children for the classroom.
For many pupils in these rural farming belts, attending school without basic tools like exercise books, pens, or mathematical sets is a daily reality that directly hinders their academic progress.
To help ease this chronic burden, agribusiness firm SafeCrop Ghana stepped in ahead of the new school term through its “1000 RootED” educational initiative, distributing over 8,500 stationery items directly to local basic schools.
Explaining the motive behind the intervention, SafeCrop Program Coordinator Hayford Agyapong Duah noted that addressing foundational educational resource gaps in farming communities directly strengthens rural households and supports long-term development.
Critical Supplies Provided: The relief package delivered over 5,000 textbooks and exercise books, 2,000 pencils, 1,000 pens, and 500 mathematical sets to students across several deprived communities.
The Headmaster of Twifo Kayireku Basic School, Richard Buckman, expressed excitement about the donation, stating that it came at the right time when many parents struggle with the financial demands of school reopening.
Beneficiary students expressed relief, sharing that having their own basic writing materials and geometry sets gives them a fair chance to participate fully in lessons this term without relying on shared supplies.
Educators in the region continue to emphasize that while corporate interventions help bridge the immediate gap, sustained efforts are needed to ensure every child in rural Ghana has reliable access to essential learning tools.
