Afrobeats star Davido has opened up about why he did not venture into politics despite coming from one of Nigeria’s most influential families
Davido, born David Adeleke, comes from the prominent Adeleke family, which has a strong presence in both business and Nigerian politics. His uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the current Governor of Osun State, while another uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, previously served as governor.
According to Davido, his own potential entry into politics came up following the death of his eldest uncle, Isiaka Adeleke.
He explained that Isiaka was expected to return as governor of Osun State before his death, leaving the family to consider who could step forward to continue its political influence.
Davido said he was considered for the role but his father felt he was too young at the time.
“My eldest uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, was meant to become Osun State governor again, but he passed away. We had to choose someone from the family, and my dad said I was too young. Then my uncle Ademola stepped in,” he said.
The decision ultimately paved the way for Ademola Adeleke to take a more prominent role in the family’s political affairs, eventually leading to his emergence as Governor of Osun State.
For Davido, however, the direction of his life took a very different turn. Rather than entering politics, he built his identity and influence through music, becoming one of Africa’s most successful Afrobeats artistes.
His global profile has since given him considerable influence, with his voice often attracting attention on social and national issues. Yet, despite that reach and his family’s political background, Davido says his focus remains primarily on his music career.
