The contractor in charge of the construction of the Children’s Specialist Hospital at Weija has officially handed over the completed facility to the government.

Officials from the Ministry of Health received the hospital on Friday, August 7, before handing it over to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for management.

However, it remains uncertain when the 120-bed facility will begin operations, as questions remain over whether the GHS has constituted a management team to oversee the hospital.

Sources also indicate that the government is yet to fully settle outstanding payments owed to the contractor.

The handover comes after months of public pressure from residents and parents in Weija, who in May 2026 organised a demonstration demanding the operationalisation of the facility, which had reportedly been completed for more than a year but remained unused.

Following the protest, the contractor was reportedly invited by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shortly after meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

When fully operational, the Children’s Specialist Hospital is expected to provide specialised paediatric healthcare services and ease pressure on existing child healthcare facilities, including the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which has faced challenges associated with ageing infrastructure.

The facility is also expected to improve access to advanced healthcare services for children in Weija-Gbawe and neighbouring communities once it officially opens to the public.
