The University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) has responded to allegations made by comedian and actor Michael Blackson regarding the treatment of his late mother, describing his account of events as containing “numerous inaccuracies.”

In a statement issued after Blackson’s comments circulated on social media on August 4, 2026, the hospital confirmed the entertainer’s 83-year-old mother passed away at the facility on July 16 after being admitted for about eight weeks.

According to the Centre, it conducted a thorough review of the concerns raised by Blackson through its established clinical and administrative processes.

However, the hospital maintained that the version of events presented by the comedian “does not accurately reflect” the medical care provided to his mother, who had been referred from another health facility and remained under UGMC’s care from May 27 to July 16, 2026.

Despite disputing the allegations, UGMC said it would not publicly disclose details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records or care, citing its ethical obligation to protect patient confidentiality even after death.

The Centre stressed that all medical decisions are made by qualified healthcare professionals based on established standards of care and the patient’s best interests, adding that designated family representatives are consulted where necessary.

It also rejected suggestions that financial considerations influence clinical decisions, stating that its billing procedures are transparent, governed by institutional policies and operate independently of patient care.

Addressing reports that Blackson’s sister allegedly assaulted a member of staff during the period of admission, UGMC confirmed that the matter had been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and said it would not comment further while the matter is under investigation.

The hospital added that it remains open to engaging the family privately through the appropriate channels and assured the public that any specific allegation of staff misconduct would be fully investigated and, where necessary, referred to the relevant authorities.

UGMC also encouraged patients and members of the public with concerns about their experiences at the facility to report them through its official client relations channels for review and resolution.
