The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised the proposed Tribunal Bill, describing it as a threat to Ghana’s democracy and urging Parliament to reject it.
According to him, the introduction of tribunals is unnecessary, arguing that the government should instead focus on expanding the existing court system and appointing more judges to address delays in the administration of justice.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Boakye alleged that the proposed legislation could be used to target political opponents and undermine fairness in the justice system.
“The new Tribunal Bill is designed to perpetrate evil, and it should be rejected. Instead of introducing this bill, the government should establish more courts and employ additional judges,” he said.
He questioned the rationale behind creating tribunals when Ghana already has established courts capable of handling legal matters.
“Why do we need tribunals when we already have courts? If you want to expand the courts, do so and bring more judges,” he stated.
Mr. Boakye claimed that Ghana’s democratic principles were being threatened and expressed concern over what he described as unequal application of laws under different administrations.
“It’s like some of the laws are for the NPP and some for the NDC. Our democracy is under siege, and we don’t expect this from President Mahama,” he said.
He further questioned why President John Dramani Mahama would support a return to tribunals, insisting that the move could create room for abuse.
“I am surprised why Mahama will let someone come and tell him we should bring back tribunals. The NDC wants to use the tribunals to perpetrate evil; nobody should support it,” he alleged.
The NPP National Organizer also raised concerns about the possible composition of such tribunals, claiming that appointments could be influenced by political considerations.
“They will appoint NDC lawyers. It’s all part of why we will be demonstrating tomorrow, and how our people are being arrested and using bail as punishment for them,” he said.
His comments come ahead of the NPP’s planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, which the party says is aimed at raising concerns over issues including alleged threats to democratic governance, freedom of expression, arrests and developments within Ghana’s justice system.
