The Kwantene Traditional Council in the Goaso Municipality of the Ahafo Region has prohibited the sale and commercial distribution of akpeteshie within the community.
The decision follows concerns over disturbances, alcohol-related disputes and the alleged desecration of sacred communal water bodies linked to the unchecked sale and consumption of the locally produced gin.
The Traditional Council said the situation had contributed to repeated incidents of unrest and an increase in cases reported to the police, raising concerns about peace and order in the community.
In a letter dated Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Chief of Kwantene, Nana Baffour Awuah Diasempa, announced that the open sale and commercial distribution of akpeteshie within the township would remain prohibited until further notice.
The Council has also cautioned residents against excessive drinking in public and behaviour that could disturb the peace as a result of alcohol consumption.
The directive does not, however, extend to other alcoholic beverages or restrict other forms of commercial activity within Kwantene.
Nana Baffour Awuah Diasempa said the decision was reached in consultation with the Queen Mother of Goaso, the Goasohemaa, as part of measures to restore order and safeguard the sanctity of traditional communal spaces.
The Traditional Council is also seeking the formal backing of the Goaso Municipal Assembly to facilitate enforcement of the directive.
The request has been forwarded through the Municipal Police Commander to the Municipal Chief Executive for consideration.
According to the Council, obtaining the Assembly’s approval would provide the Ghana Police Service with the necessary authority and institutional support to monitor compliance and enforce the restriction.
