The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed traders and garage operators operating along the Abrepo and WESCO sections of the Suame Interchange Project corridor to relocate by September 7, 2026.
The directive is intended to clear the affected areas ahead of the commencement of enabling works for Phase 1 of the project, which will involve major road and interchange construction activities.
According to the Assembly, the preparatory works will include the relocation of Ghana Water Company Limited pipelines and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) infrastructure, as well as measures to facilitate traffic management during construction.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the KMA directed affected traders to relocate to the Race Course Market.
Garage operators have also been advised to contact the Works Engineer at the Race Course Market for assistance in identifying suitable locations for their operations.
The directive follows an engagement involving Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, KMA technical officers, project consultants, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, the project coordinator, representatives of contractor Rango Construction Limited, affected traders and other stakeholders.
The Assembly has appealed to all affected persons to comply with the directive to ensure that the enabling works begin on schedule.
Meanwhile, the KMA says Phase 2 of the Suame Interchange Project is currently 87 per cent complete and is expected to be opened to motorists by October 2026.
The second phase comprises the construction of three overpasses at Anomangye Junction, Magazine New Road Junction and Abusuakruwa Junction.
It also includes the expansion of the Offinso Road into a 2×3-lane dual carriageway, the construction of 15 kilometres of local roads and upgrades to selected intersections.
The completion of Phase 2 is expected to ease traffic congestion along the corridor and create the necessary conditions for the intensive construction works under Phase 1.
