Lead counsel for Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Samuel Atta Akyea, has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over what he describes as unnecessary delays in the handling of his client’s case.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr Atta Akyea said the process at EOCO was unprofessional and showed a lack of respect for people’s time.
He explained that he arrived at EOCO at about 10:56 a.m. after being granted access to enter the premises but remained there until late in the day.
“When I was allowed to enter EOCO, it was around 10:56 in the morning. We were there until late, and it is very bad,” he said.
According to the lawyer, institutions such as EOCO must operate in a manner that respects citizens and adheres to proper procedures.
“What they are doing there is not even professional. You don’t allow us to come there and delay us for that long while you do whatever you want. It means the institution does not respect people and does not stick to its own time,” he stated.
Mr Atta Akyea said the main issue discussed during the engagement was an alleged GH¢55 million procurement matter, adding that Mr Aboagye provided the information he had on the issue.
“The main issue was the GH¢55 million procurement issue that happened, and he also told them what he knew,” he said.
Mr Aboagye, a former aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was arrested by EOCO upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport.
According to EOCO, the arrest is linked to investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities involving about GH¢55 million during Mr Aboagye’s tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD).
He was later granted bail and released after meeting the conditions set by the court.
