The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will remain as head coach of the Black Stars after agreeing a new deal with the Portuguese veteran.
The announcement ends weeks of uncertainty over Queiroz’s future following the expiry of his initial four-month contract last month.
The 73-year-old, who previously managed Egypt, Colombia and Iran, was appointed in April after Otto Addo was dismissed following a disappointing run of results. He was tasked with leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Under Queiroz, the Black Stars reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
Ghana opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before earning a goalless draw against England. A 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match was still enough to secure progress, although their run ended with a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Despite reports that negotiations had been delayed by contractual demands, the GFA said an agreement had now been reached following discussions involving the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the GFA said in a statement.
The governing body added that Queiroz’s previous mandate concluded after the World Cup and that both parties had agreed on a fresh coaching assignment beginning with the next international window.
The GFA said Queiroz’s “extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars” made him well placed to guide the team into its next phase, with further details of his new mandate expected in due course.
AFCON qualifiers await
Queiroz’s first assignment under the new agreement will be Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The four-time African champions begin away to Côte d’Ivoire on 24 September at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké before hosting The Gambia three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana will be aiming to secure a return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing out on qualification for the previous tournament in Morocco.
