Police from the Jacobu District Command have moved into Numereso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region to prevent a planned installation of a Zongo chief amid rising tensions in the community.
The intervention follows disagreements over the alleged installation of Baba Musa Sumaila as chief of the Numereso Zongo community.
Speaking to Adom News, the Jacobu District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Mireku, said the police received intelligence about the planned installation and took steps to prevent a possible conflict.
He said the police had engaged the Jacobu Zongo leadership, the Bekwai Omanhene, the Bekwai Twafohene and other stakeholders to help resolve the matter and maintain peace.
Superintendent Mireku appealed to residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm while efforts were made to address the dispute.
Meanwhile, some aggrieved residents and elected unit committee members have opposed the alleged installation, arguing that it lacks the necessary traditional approval and has not followed due process.
They have accused the Bekwai Twafohene, Nana Boapim Panko II, of allegedly dissolving the elected unit committee and taking over the functions of the Assembly Member and unit committee members.
The residents further allege that he is seeking to install his biological brother as Acting Chief of Numereso without the prior knowledge of the Bekwai Omanhene, Nana Osei Kwadwo Ababio.
They are appealing to the Omanhene and other relevant authorities to intervene urgently to resolve the dispute and prevent further escalation.
The police have urged residents to remain calm as consultations continue to find a peaceful resolution to the matter.
