A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a legal practitioner, Dr. Kwame Jantuah, has criticised the Electoral Commission’s (EC) re-collation of parliamentary results, describing the process as “one-sided.”

The re-collation, conducted at the EC’s regional office in Accra, saw results declared for seven constituencies, all in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The affected constituencies included Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano South West, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently opposed the re-collation, labeling it illegal and refusing to accept the outcomes.

During an interview on GHOne TV, Dr. Jantuah expressed his frustration and questioned the rationale behind the EC’s actions.

He slammed the Commission for failing to provide evidence to substantiate its claims of duress, noting that EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, as a lawyer, should appreciate the significance of evidence in such matters.

Dr. Jantuah also questioned the role of police officers stationed at polling centers, asking why they failed to prevent the alleged duress and why the EC has not provided clear evidence to support its claims.

“I don’t understand what the EC is trying to do. Some constituencies were declared and the next thing the Electoral Commission said there was duress. How can a political party put duress on you, the EC, to declare something that isn’t right? I don’t understand this. Shouldn’t the EC be speaking with their officers to explain with evidence? Did she show us the video when she was doing the press conference to the public? I didn’t see, and everything is evidence.

“She’s a lawyer. Everything is evidence, so where’s the evidence to show that there was duress? Weren’t there police officers at the polling stations? What were they doing there? Weren’t they supposed to keep order? What happened?”.

Let’s respect the work of media – Kwame Jantuah urges https://www.adomonline.com/lets-respect-the-work-of-media-kwame-jantuah-urges/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 20:52:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2441176 A senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah has made a passionate appeal for respect towards the work of the media, noting the importance of press freedom in maintaining a healthy democracy.

Speaking at a JoyNews national dialogue focused on defending media freedom, Mr Jantuah highlighted that the freedoms granted by the media in the constitution should not be taken for granted, as doing so could have serious consequences for society.

He stressed that the police should not misuse their power, reminding them that their role is to serve the people and protect their rights.

“If for nothing at all, let us respect the work of the media. Without the media, we hear nothing, our ears are deaf,” Jantuah stated on Thursday, August 29.

This appeal comes at a time when media freedom is increasingly under threat.

Mr Jantuah also called for continuous discussions on press freedom throughout the year, not just during election periods. He believes that the dialogue is essential for educating the youth and the younger generation about the significance of media in society.

To illustrate his point, Jantuah shared a personal story about his sister, Nana Yaa Jantuah, who pursued a career in journalism at their father’s advice, despite initially wanting to become a lawyer.

He expressed that any harm to her or other journalists would personally affect him, reinforcing his commitment to supporting the media to ensure that the right things are done to protect their work.

“If anything happens to her, for me, it will hurt me so I need to support journalists so that the right thing is done,” he said.

Bawumia should have resigned as Vice President – Kwame Jantuah https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-should-have-resigned-as-vice-president-kwame-jantuah/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 13:38:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2353875 Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposal to abolish some revenue measures implemented by President Akufo-Addo has been described as a betrayal.

At a public lecture held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer said that the E-levy, bet tax and emissions tax would be removed.

But this appears not to have gone down well with many political critics, including Kwame Jantuah, CEO of African Energy Consortium Limited.

The lawyer speaking on Joy Prime’s AM Show, stated that Dr. Bawumia cannot separate himself from President Akufo-Addo’s legacies.

Mr. Jantuah believes that the Vice President should have resigned or made his position on the implementation of the unpopular revenue measures known from the onset.

“You tell us you want to scrape E-Levy. Were you not part of the decision-making process? At the time that the E-Levy came up, he should have voiced out to the people of Ghana, ‘I do not agree with this E-Levy’.

“There are many ways of stringing a cat. If you don’t agree to something, you’ve got to find a way to convince your boss.”

The lawyer added that the NPP flagbearer must take responsibility for his actions and inactions during the seven-year administration of Akufo-Addo.

The CEO at African Energy Consortium Limited also indicated that if the country mattered more than the NPP to Dr Bawumia, he would insist on it not being approved and would have resigned if the need arose.

“You don’t need to be vice president to become president. If you feel you’re strong in your conviction that you can convince Ghanaians that you can lead this country well, then you can stand on your volition.”

He went ahead to state an instance where his father, Franklin Adubobi Jantuah resigned from former President J.J. Rawlings’ administration as the Minister of Agriculture when he was opposed to some fiscal policies.

Influx of Chinese tanker trucks will kill local businesses – Kwame Jantuah https://www.adomonline.com/influx-of-chinese-tanker-trucks-will-kill-local-businesses-kwame-jantuah/ Mon, 25 Sep 2023 16:21:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2298022 Pressure is mounting on the government to address the influx of tanker trucks owned by Chinese companies in Ghana.

A member of the Tanker Owners Union, Kwame Jantuah, has warned authorities against the consequences of the influx of tanker trucks in Ghana’s oil downstream sector.

The union in the past weeks have been up in arms with Sentuo refinery which has been identified as the importer of the tanker trucks.

The Executive Secretary, Ignatius Doe disclosed the union has informed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) which is the regulatory body, but no concrete step has been taken.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the private legal practitioner stated that, local businesses are at risk of collapse.

“We have about 5,000 tanker trucks in operation and some have been parked because they have no work to do. So why do we have to allow foreigners to import 600 more trucks? They won’t allow this in their country so why should we allow them?” he bemoaned.

Mr Jantuah indicated that, the Chinese if not stopped now will embark on other ventures which will be detrimental to the Ghana economy.

“The Chinese just don’t do anything for nothing. They have a plan for everything. They want maximum control to put in a refinery, and the next thing, they want to go into haulage then you will see will be petrol garages.

They will cut down their process to become attractive and we can’t allow that to happen. The number of people that will go out of business will be more than the number of people that they[Chinese] will employ and the profit they will be making will be repatriated back to China because it will be done in Dollars and this will put a strain on the Ghanaian economy,” he warned.

Why Afriyie Akoto can’t be trusted with presidency https://www.adomonline.com/why-afriyie-akoto-cant-be-trusted-with-presidency/ Sat, 26 Aug 2023 13:45:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2287597 Private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah, has said that the likelihood of former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Afriyie Akoto making it to the top 5 remains uncertain.

According to him, delegates will not vote for Dr. Akoto because they do not trust him.

“If we look at all the good things that Dr Akoto has done which will influence the voters to vote for him. One of the things that will affect him negatively even though that is not his fault is that he is seen as the friend of the president and that if the establishment candidate phenomenon is anything to go by people will not trust him.”

“They will believe that a vote for Akoto will by extension be a vote for the president. If what we’re hearing is true that there is an establishment candidate, I believe strongly that if there is the need for alliance he will opt out and join the Bawumia camp,” he said on Accra-based TV3.

To him, the former minister will be seen as a mole even if he makes the top five.

He stated that the party needs a flagbearer who is firm and stands his ground which which Akufo-Addo lacks however, Dr. Akoto doesn’t fit the criteria.

Former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong have been listed as the frontrunners of the Super Delegates Congress.

Why Akufo-Addo can’t ban ‘galamsey’ https://www.adomonline.com/why-akufo-addo-cant-ban-galamsey/ Sat, 22 Apr 2023 08:26:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2242139 A legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah, has stated President Nana Akufo-Addo is unable to ban small-scale mining and ‘galamsey’ because he can’t create jobs in the rural areas.

To him, if government is able to create jobs in mining communities, the youth will not engage in illegal mining as means of survival.

“The reason why President Akufo- Addo can’t ban small-scale mining and galamsey is the fact that he can’t create jobs in the rural areas. If he can create jobs, he will ban it.

“It’s sad, it’s shameful that foreigners can come into our country and exploit our natural resources,” he said on Accra-based TV3.

Lawyer Jantuah concluded that President Akufo-Addo has woefully failed at managing Ghana’s natural resources as promised.

The fight against ‘galamsey’ seems to be far from over and President Akufo-Addo has admitted it has not been an easy one.

For decades, activities from the canker have left numerous water bodies polluted, unsafe, and impure for both domestic and industrial use.

Kwame Jantuah calls for 20-year development plan for energy sector https://www.adomonline.com/kwame-jantuah-calls-for-20-year-development-plan-for-energy-sector/ Sat, 21 Mar 2020 19:54:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1767913 Former Chairperson of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the African Consortium Limited, Kwame Jantuah, has advocated for a 20-year energy sector development plan.

According to the energy analyst, the development plan will help the country end the numerous challenges currently facing the energy sector.

“We’ve had problems with our energy sector since immemorial, the National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party have failed to fix the sector because there is no continuity in their manifestos. What we need is a continuous 20-year plan for our energy sector like South Korea,” he said on Adom TV’s Nnawotwe Yi Saturday morning show.

Mr Jantuah’s assertion follows days of power outages experienced in some parts of the nation’s capital, Accra.

The Minority in Parliament, following the power outages, accused the government of falling short of money to finance the energy sector and is consequently trying to bring back ‘dumsor.’

But the Energy Ministry in response to claims by the Minority in Parliament, said the power outages were only due to maintenance works which were being undertaken by the country’s energy distribution company, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Addressing reasons assigned to the power outages by ECG, Mr Jantuah advised the power distribution company to before hand inform Ghanaians of activities likely to cause power outages before carrying them out.

“Dumsor impacted Ghanaians psychologically, so anytime there is a power outage Ghanaians think ‘dumsor’ has returned. So for whatever reason, ECG must communicate to Ghanaians of a possible power outage before going ahead with an activity,” he said.
