The convict, Kwame Ti-Zaaekuu, was found guilty of incest and threat of death after a full trial.

According to a statement issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command, investigations by the Lawra District Police established that the victim, a Junior High School student, had been subjected to repeated sexual abuse by her father.

Police said the convict allegedly threatened to kill the teenager if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.

Following investigations and prosecution, the Lawra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Stanley Adjei, on Friday, July 24, 2026, found Kwame Ti-Zaaekuu guilty of both offences.

The court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for incest and an additional 10 years for threat of death. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve 20 years in prison.

The court also directed the Department of Social Welfare in Lawra to provide counselling and psychosocial support to the survivor.

The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the investigators and prosecutor for their professionalism in securing the conviction.

The Command further urged the public to promptly report all forms of sexual abuse, domestic violence and related offences to the police to ensure victims receive protection and perpetrators are brought to justice.

The convict, Elyasu Kunateh, was found guilty after a full trial and sentenced on Thursday, July 23, 2026, by His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi.

According to a statement issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command, the incident was reported by the victim’s mother after the alleged abuse occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Police arrested Kunateh on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following the report.

The Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) immediately commenced investigations into the case and referred the victim to a medical facility for examination while also providing psychosocial support.

The accused was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody pending the conclusion of the trial.

Following months of court proceedings, the court found Kunateh guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse and sexual and gender-based violence are brought to justice.

The Command also urged parents, guardians, caregivers and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station for immediate action.

Ants are not among the 10 insect species approved for human consumption under the country’s laws. The approved list includes grasshoppers, locusts and two-spotted crickets, among others.

Prosecutors on Monday also asked that the restaurant, which holds two Michelin stars, be fined 20 million Korean won ($13,510; £10,100).

The owner admitted to serving ants but argued that they were used in a “small part” of the restaurant’s 15-course menu – as a topping for sorbets – and that diners were told they could opt for non-ant toppings.

The case came to light after officials from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety found reviews that diners had posted online with photographs of dishes sprinkled with ants.

Investigators estimate that some 49,000 ants, imported from the US and Thailand, were used in several dishes over four years.

Health authorities also found that the restaurant used ants that “contained up to 55 times more heavy metals than typical edible insects”, according to a report on The Chosun Daily.

South Korean authorities consider several criteria in deciding whether insects can be approved as food. These include food safety risks, toxicity, nutritional value, and whether they can be bred and processed hygienically.

In its defence the restaurant owner argued that just 60% of diners had opted to try the ants, while the rest were served alternatives like fermented vinegar and edible flowers.

He added that restaurants in other countries, such as Australia, Denmark and the UK, also use ants as ingredients.

Court documents did not name the restaurant nor its owner. Ten restaurants in South Korea, all located in capital city Seoul, have been awarded two Michelin stars.

The Michelin Guide awards up to three stars to eateries based on ingredient quality, flavour mastery, cooking technique, chef’s personality and consistency.

Two stars denote restaurants that do “excellent cooking” and are “worth a detour”, according to Michelin’s criteria.

The court is set to deliver its verdict on 2 September.

Camilla appeared before the court on Thursday, July 16, where she admitted to the charges before the sentence was handed down.

The prosecution told the court that the TikToker published several videos on social media containing false and offensive allegations against the President, including an unsubstantiated claim that he buried 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

Court documents also outlined a series of other allegations she made online. These included claims that President Mahama had committed sexual offences, fathered a child as a result of excessive alcohol consumption, was responsible for the deaths of former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, and used abusive language against the President.

Prosecutors said the allegations were published without evidence and were capable of causing harm to the reputations of the individuals involved.

Following her guilty plea to all the charges, the Accra Circuit Court sentenced Camilla Alhassan to 12 months’ imprisonment.

The case has drawn significant public attention and reignited discussions about responsible use of social media, misinformation and the legal consequences of publishing defamatory or false content online.

The convict, Francis Addae, popularly known as Nana Kwame, was found guilty of stealing and illegally possessing human skeletal parts after investigations by the police.

According to police, Addae was arrested on June 19, 2026, in connection with a theft case at Awaso STEM Senior High School.

During a search of his room at Sefwi Atronsu, led by the Sefwi Bekwai District Police Commander, DSP Peter Nartey, officers discovered a red-and-black travelling bag containing several human skeletal remains.

The items retrieved included a human skull, a femur bone and a lower jaw.

Following investigations, the suspect was arraigned before the Bibiani Circuit Court, where he was convicted on charges of stealing and unlawful possession of human remains.

Presiding judge, His Honour Frank Asiedu Nimako, sentenced Addae to five years’ imprisonment.

The offences are contrary to Ghana’s criminal laws governing stealing and the unlawful possession or interference with human remains.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station to aid law enforcement efforts.

The convict reportedly deceived applicants at the NIA Regional Office by falsely offering assistance with Ghana Card registration and update services.

He is said to have collected cash, mobile phones, and personal documents from unsuspecting victims under the pretext of helping them process their cards.

His arrest followed a joint operation by the NIA Police Investigation Unit and staff of the Authority after complaints were lodged over suspicious activities around the registration centre.

During court proceedings, Mensah pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and defrauding by false pretences and was convicted on his own plea.

Authorities have since cautioned the public to remain vigilant and deal only with authorised NIA officials at designated service centres to avoid falling victim to similar scams.

He has subsequently been sentenced to seven days in prison over the newspaper’s publication on a case involving Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.

Mr Dogbey disclosed the conviction in a Facebook post on Thursday, stating that the judgment was delivered by Justice Isaac Addo.

According to him, The Herald had only reported on a petition allegedly submitted by the multinational company to several state institutions, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), and the Attorney-General’s Department.

“Justice Isaac Addo of the Accra High Court has just convicted me and sentenced me to seven days’ imprisonment in the case involving Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA. The Herald newspaper reported only on a petition filed by the multinational company with CID, EOCO, GIPC, the Attorney-General, among others. Ghana deserves better. Journalism is not a crime,” Mr Dogbey wrote.

Further details surrounding the court’s decision and the legal basis for the conviction are yet to be made public.

The court heard that the convict attacked his sister, Akua Agyeiwaa, 50, during a misunderstanding on January 17, 2026, an incident which left her with severe injuries after he allegedly stabbed her in the eyes.

Following the attack, William Gyamfi was arrested and arraigned before the court to answer for the assault.

After several sittings, His Honour James Mensah Donkor, presiding over the Sefwi Bodi Circuit Court, found him guilty and sentenced him to five years imprisonment with hard labour.

Speaking to Adom News, the Juaboso District Police Commander, Superintendent Isaac Otsin, confirmed the conviction and said it reflects the combined efforts of the police and the judiciary in ensuring justice and maintaining law and order in the area.

He further cautioned members of the public, particularly men, against acts of violence, stressing that offenders will be dealt with decisively under the law.

The convict, Mohammed Rafiu, was found guilty after pleading guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing, according to the Volta North Regional Police Command.

In a statement issued on June 9, 2026, police said the incident occurred on June 5 when Rafiu was spotted near the Faith International Ministry Church carrying a sack containing various items while attempting to board a vehicle.

His actions reportedly aroused suspicion among some residents, who approached him and inspected the contents of the sack.

The search revealed several items belonging to the church, including an amplifier, an equalizer, a mixer and a crossover machine.

Police said Rafiu was subsequently arrested and taken to the Hohoe Police District for investigations.

During interrogation, he admitted to unlawfully entering the church premises and stealing the equipment.

The suspect was arraigned before the Hohoe Circuit Court on Monday, June 8, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful entry and stealing.

The court sentenced him to three years imprisonment for unlawful entry and four years imprisonment for stealing.

The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Mohammed Rafiu will serve a maximum of four years in prison.

Police say the conviction underscores their commitment to protecting public property and bringing offenders to justice.

According to prosecutors, Nkwantabisa, 33, who operated under the aliases Kevin Brown and KO, led the United States arm of a transnational cybercrime network that stole more than US$38 million through sophisticated email fraud.

Court documents revealed that members of the network gained unauthorised access to victims’ email accounts and secretly monitored communications relating to pending business transactions and payments. The fraudsters then impersonated trusted business partners and redirected funds into bank accounts under their control.

Investigators said the criminal network used multiple bank accounts and shell companies to conceal the origin of the stolen funds and evade detection by authorities.

Prosecutors told the court that Nkwantabisa coordinated overseas accomplices, directed the establishment of bank accounts across several states, monitored incoming fraudulent transfers and instructed co-conspirators on how to launder the proceeds of the crime.

His central role in the operation resulted in the longest sentence handed down in the case.

Three other members of the network were also sentenced.

Leshea Moore, 29, of Georgia, received more than 11 years in prison after admitting to creating shell companies, opening fraudulent bank accounts and helping to move stolen funds.

John Jouissance, 33, of Ohio, was sentenced to four years after pleading guilty to establishing shell companies and bank accounts used to receive illicit proceeds.

Justice Amoh, 37, of New York, who operated under the alias Samuel Andrews, received a three-year prison sentence for opening accounts using false identities and processing fraudulent transactions at Nkwantabisa’s direction.

Commenting on the case, United States Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones said the defendants exploited legitimate business relationships and abused the trust of their victims to steal millions of dollars.

He noted that the convictions send a strong message to individuals who seek to use the American financial system to facilitate fraud and money laundering.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Fort Lauderdale, while prosecutors from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida handled the case.

The sentencing was announced in a press release on Wednesday by the Office of the US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan.

The sentencing was delivered by Chief US District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou, who also imposed a concurrent 60-month sentence for tax evasion and ordered Ezeh to pay $1.4 million in restitution and $390,174 to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Ezeh, 61, of Kent County, Michigan, was the founder and former CEO of Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, a West Michigan nonprofit that provided early childhood services in underserved communities.

She is also a former Associate Professor of Education and Director of Early Childhood Education Program at Aquinas College.

She was immediately remanded into federal custody after sentencing.

During the proceedings, Judge Jarbou described Ezeh as “a fraud and a thief,” adding that the scheme was “brazen and widespread,” and involved funds intended for some of the region’s most vulnerable children.

US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey, said Ezeh diverted money meant for low-income children for personal use.

“Nkechy Ezeh’s greed is beyond reprehensible.

“She stole taxpayer and private-donor dollars meant for low-income children in our community. Instead of helping kids, she spent that money on herself.

“The stolen money could have supported hundreds of West Michigan children and their families. Judge Jarbou’s sentence was perfectly appropriate,” VerHey said.

According to court filings, Ezeh used stolen funds to finance personal expenses, including travel to Hawaii, Europe and Africa, as well as a family wedding.

Prosecutors also said she placed relatives on a “ghost payroll,” enabling them to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars for little or no work.

She was further accused of using intermediaries to transfer stolen funds to family members in Nigeria.

The nonprofit, ELNC, was funded by US federal programmes including Head Start, the Department of Education, and private donors. It provided meals, transport and support services to children in low-income communities.

Following the fraud, ELNC shut down in 2023, leading to the loss of funding for several preschools and the layoff of 35 employees.

A former bookkeeper at the organisation, Sharon Killebrew, who was identified as a co-conspirator, was earlier sentenced to 54 months in prison for her role in the scheme.

US authorities said the case highlights the abuse of federal grants and its impact on vulnerable communities, particularly children in low-income neighbourhoods.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Internal Revenue Service–Criminal Investigation unit, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Clay Stiffler prosecuted the case.

The court, presided over by Her Ladyship Nana Asantewaa Atakorah, handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the firearm-related offence.

According to police, Michael Ayitey was arrested by the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Command led by ASP Godwin Nornoo.

Investigations indicate that on April 30, 2026, the suspect allegedly attacked a woman with a gun and attempted to rob her before some residents intervened and rescued the victim.

Police subsequently arrested the suspect and arraigned him on two charges: possession of a firearm without authority and robbery.

While Ayitey pleaded guilty to the firearm possession charge, he denied the robbery allegation.

The court sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment on the firearm charge, while proceedings on the robbery case have been adjourned to May 27, 2026.

According to him, any landlord who removes the roof of a tenant’s room or forcibly ejects occupants without due process could face imprisonment.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Opoku described such actions as criminal and a violation of human rights.

“Any landlord who attempts to remove a roof because of rent issues with a tenant is a candidate for jail,” he stated.

He stressed that the Rent Control Department under his leadership would not tolerate what he described as “self-evictions” by landlords.

“I want us to reflect on the fact that there is a Rent Commissioner who believes that zero tolerance for self-evictions will not be allowed. It is criminal,” he said.

Mr. Opoku warned that landlords who unlawfully eject tenants or destroy parts of their accommodation risk prosecution once such cases are reported to his office.

“Any landlord who makes an attempt and the report comes to my table that you have gathered the capacity to remove someone, you would go to jail,” he cautioned.

He further described forced evictions and acts such as locking up tenants or removing roofing sheets as serious offences under the law.

“It is an abuse of human rights. Why would you jam a tenant’s room or remove his roof because he is not paying? It’s a high crime,” he added.

The Acting Rent Commissioner also noted that Ghana’s tenancy laws recognise statutory tenancy and provide legal procedures landlords must follow in resolving disputes with tenants.

The apex court, presided over by Justice Avril Lovelace-Johnson, delivered the decision on February 10, 2026, after finding that Appiah had suffered a miscarriage of justice following his conviction and 45-year sentence in 2011.

The five-member panel, which included Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Samuel Asiedu, Justice Yaw Darko Asare, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, awarded the compensation after considering submissions from both the applicant and the State.

Case background

Yaw Appiah, a drinking bar owner, was arrested in 2006 and spent five years on remand before being convicted in 2011 for robbery at the age of 29. He was subsequently sentenced to 45 years in prison.

However, in March 2025, the Court of Appeal acquitted and discharged him after ruling that he had been wrongfully convicted. The appellate court described the conviction as a “tragedy” after he had already served about 19 years in Nsawam Prison.

His acquittal triggered a formal application for compensation at the Supreme Court.

Compensation application

Appiah’s lawyers, Augustine Obour and Claudia Coleman, filed an application under Article 14(5) and (7) of the 1992 Constitution, seeking GH¢2,020,800 in compensation for wrongful imprisonment.

The State, represented by Principal State Attorney Nana Adoma Osei, however, proposed a much lower figure, suggesting between GH¢75,000 and GH¢100,000.

After reviewing the case, the Supreme Court awarded GH¢800,000, stating that the amount was appropriate based on legal principles, including guidance from the Dodzi Sabbah case.

Constitutional basis

The ruling was grounded in Article 14 of the 1992 Constitution, which provides for compensation in cases of unlawful detention and wrongful conviction.

Article 14(5) states that individuals unlawfully arrested or detained are entitled to compensation, while Article 14(7) empowers the Supreme Court to award compensation where an appellate court or the apex court itself overturns a conviction.

Amponsah Thompson, a 29-year-old with leave to remain in the United Kingdom, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court today after a harrowing catalogue of offences against three young women, two of them aged just 18, between August 2024 and 2025.

The court heard that the Ghanaian national operated with chilling calculation, trawling the city’s nightlife districts in his white Mercedes, searching for lone, intoxicated teenagers before striking.

The first attack came in August 2024, when an 18-year-old woman left a night out shortly after 2 am after visiting popular bars including Heebie Jeebies and Lost in Seel Street. Heavily drunk and separated from her friends, she approached Thompson’s car near the former Alma de Cuba venue, now St Peter’s Tavern, and asked if he was a taxi driver.

Prosecutor David Polglase told the court that Thompson “lied and pretended that he was.” Believing she was being taken home, the teenager climbed into the vehicle. Instead, he drove her to his own address on Rocky Lane in Tuebrook, where he joined her in the back seat and touched her between her thighs.

She escaped further violation only by pretending her family was phoning and that she had shared her location with them. Thompson stopped and drove her home. She later insisted on paying him, a fatal mistake for her attacker—bank transfers allowed police to trace him directly.

When interviewed, Thompson denied pretending to be a taxi driver, claiming he had only stopped at his home to collect identification. He insisted there had been no physical contact and that he had never entered the back seat. He was released on bail.

But he did not stop. In December 2024, while still under investigation, Thompson prowled again. He found another 18-year-old woman, described by the prosecution as “extremely drunk and vulnerable,” slumped by a wall in the city centre after a night that had taken her to a Wetherspoon pub, McCooley’s and Soho.

Separated from her friends, she was seen being escorted back to his vehicle at around 3.30am. She later recalled “zoning in and out of sleep” and waking up at his flat, where she had been raped. Thompson drove her home the next day. He later claimed the sexual activity had been consensual, but a jury convicted him of one count of rape following a trial.

Throughout 2025, as detectives continued their work, Thompson preyed upon a third victim, raping her an estimated six or seven times. He also subjected her to violent assaults and threatened her with a knife. Mr Polglase told the court: “We say that this defendant is manipulative. He is a sexual predator. He has little or no regard for the boundaries of and consent for sex.”

The court heard that while Thompson had no previous convictions, he had been investigated in January 2024 over an allegation that he sexually assaulted a lap dancer, though the woman later withdrew her complaint and no charges were brought.

Defence barrister Anthony O’Donohoe urged the court to remember that his client was previously a man of good character with no criminal record, adding that his immigration status was “subject to review.” He asked for a sentence “as short as is consistent with your honour’s public duty.”

But Judge Brian Cummings KC was unmoved. Sentencing Thompson, who appeared via video link from HMP Liverpool wearing a white Puma t-shirt, the judge declared him a dangerous offender. “There would remain a significant risk to members of the public of serious harm at the point that you would have otherwise served a fixed term sentence,” he said. He added that deportation was a matter for the appropriate authority, making no order himself but leaving the door firmly open.

Thompson was jailed for 23 years, with an additional eight years on licence. He must serve two thirds of the 23-year term before becoming eligible for release by the Parole Board, and he will sign the sex offenders’ register for life. He had admitted sexual assault against his first victim and three counts of rape against the third.

The sentence was handed down after Osei failed to pay a GH¢1,200 fine imposed for dumping refuse at an unauthorised location.

According to the Assembly, the conviction followed a dawn sanitation enforcement exercise carried out by Environmental Health Officers between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. across parts of the Accra metropolis.

Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, disclosed that Osei was arrested during the operation after being caught engaging in the illegal act.

He explained that Osei is a known repeat offender who was first arrested on September 15, 2025, for a similar offence, contrary to Section 56(a) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

In that earlier case, Osei was fined GH¢600 or faced a three-month jail term but avoided imprisonment after the fine was paid on his behalf.

However, he was rearrested on April 14, 2026, at the same location for repeating the offence.

Authorities say his failure to pay the new fine resulted in the custodial sentence.

The Assembly has reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation laws and warned that repeat offenders will face strict penalties as efforts intensify to keep the city clean.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command confirmed that suspects Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery on April 10, 2026.

The court subsequently sentenced Rashid Adams to 30 years imprisonment and Godfred Ampadu to 25 years imprisonment, with both sentences to run concurrently.

A third suspect, Dominic Naazie, who is alleged to have aided the crime, pleaded not guilty and has been remanded into custody. He is expected to reappear before the court on April 24, 2026.

The convictions follow investigations into a robbery incident on April 3, 2026, during which a gold dealer was attacked, knocked down with a tricycle, and robbed of gold and cash.

Police investigations led to the arrest of the suspects and the retrieval of the stolen gold, along with a vehicle believed to have been purchased using proceeds from the crime.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its continued commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.

In total, 19 inmates appeared before the court. Of these, eight secured bail, providing temporary relief while awaiting trial, and four were found guilty and handed custodial sentences. One inmate had their bail application denied. Additionally, four cases were struck out, while two inmates were referred to a psychiatric hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Meanwhile, warrants for 31 inmates that had expired were renewed for an additional two weeks. These individuals are expected to reappear before the court on April 9, 2026.

Introduced in 2007, the Justice for All Programme has played a key role in addressing delays in the judicial system and safeguarding the rights of individuals held in prolonged detention.

Over the past 19 years, the initiative has helped reduce Ghana’s remand prison population from 30.57 percent in 2007 to 12.23 percent today. Authorities continue to emphasize that the programme is a vital tool in promoting fairness and efficiency in the country’s justice delivery system.

Presiding judge His Honour Isaac Appiatu handed down the sentence after the court found Ofori guilty of his role in a robbery at Manso Akwasiso.

Speaking to Adom News, DSP Bright Acheampong, Staff Officer at the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, said Ofori was part of a four-member gang that attacked a miner, Kwaku Abonce, on March 20, 2022. The group reportedly attempted to rob the victim of gold concentrate valued at GH¢30,000.

Police said three members of the gang — Abu Abubakar, Musa Latif and Gideon Takyi — were shot and killed during a police operation shortly after the incident. Ofori, however, escaped and went into hiding until his recent arrest.

DSP Acheampong further disclosed that Ofori may face additional prosecution over other alleged offences, including his suspected involvement in the killing of a police corporal in the Manso area about 10 years ago.

He cautioned young people against engaging in criminal activities and urged them to pursue lawful and productive livelihoods.

Police say the conviction forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on armed robbery and strengthen security in mining communities across the Ashanti Region.

Sampson Kwabena Ebo pleaded guilty to stealing a Nokia HD Android phone valued at GH¢3,000, a lady’s handbag valued at GH¢550 and clothes valued at GH¢350 from a shop at Makola in Accra.  

The court convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly. 

The prosecution told the court that the complainant, Theresa Ocansey, is a businesswoman residing at Amamole, Accra, while Ebo resides at Konkomba, Accra. 

 The court heard that an assistant at the Office of the Special Operations under the Inspector General of Police intercepted CCTV footage showing a young man entering Ocansey’s shop at Makola Market and stealing the items. 

The prosecution said a team was tasked to place surveillance on the suspect captured in the footage. 

 On February 10, 2026, based on intelligence, the team proceeded to Konkomba Market and arrested Ebo. 

 When shown the CCTV footage by the Police, Ebo identified himself as the person who entered the shop and stole the items. 

 During investigations, Ebo told the police he had sold the mobile phone to a man known as Baba for GHC500 and discarded the handbag and clothes. 

 The prosecution said investigations indicated that Ebo operated with accomplices who entered shops during busy hours with the intention of stealing daily sales. 

 The court heard that when the police visited Baba’s workplace, he had absconded, and efforts were underway to arrest him.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage to 68 cocoa trees, is currently serving an 18-month prison term in hard labour.  

Police Inspector Patrick Essien, the prosecutor, told the court that the complainant, Bukari Imoro, and Asamoah were farmers and both lived in Anokyekrom, a village near Huniso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.  

He said the complainant’s and the convict’s farms were in different locations, far apart.  

In April 2025, Asamoah visited the complainant’s farm twice, and chopped down sixty-eight mature cocoa trees with fruits.  

He said the complainant went to his farm afterwards and found that his cocoa trees had been felled. 

He suspected Asamoah was responsible for the damage, given his prior record.  

The complainant reported the issue to village leaders, and Asamoah was summoned but refused to appear. 

Inspector Essien said that after Asamoah was invited, the complainant learned that Asamoah was going around the community, claiming he caused the damage to the cocoa plantation, threatening to chop more trees, and that he did.  

The prosecution said the complainant reported the matter to the Tarkwa Police on April 6, 2025, and that Asamoah was arrested.  

He said Asamoah told the police during the investigation that he damaged the cocoa trees but could not provide a solid explanation for why he did so.  

The convicts, Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, a resident of Kyekyewere near Obuasi, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo, were found guilty after a full trial.

They were first arraigned before the court on January 30, 2024, on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetment of robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

On January 5, 2026, the court, presided over by His Honour Mr Isaac Appeatu Esq., convicted the two. Francis Oppong was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour, while Francis Nyamekye received a 25-year sentence with hard labour.

Both have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to begin serving their sentences.

The convictions followed a robbery incident on December 16, 2023, at Kyekyewere near Obuasi, involving a small-scale miner. Police investigations revealed that the convicts, together with accomplices currently at large, planned and carried out the attack at the victim’s residence and mining site.

Francis Oppong, who lived in the same community as the victim, was found to have monitored the victim’s movements and passed on information to the robbery gang. During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries.

The robbers made away with a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold worth about GH¢100,000, and cash amounting to GH¢2,000.

Further intelligence led to the arrest of Francis Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during a failed robbery attempt.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining accomplices to ensure they face justice.

According to court proceedings, Avenyo allegedly stole the phone from the driver and went on to take a photograph of himself using the stolen device.

The image was later uploaded onto the victim’s WhatsApp status, alerting the owner and aiding in tracking down the suspect.

Further investigations revealed that the accused had also stolen an amount of GH¢7,000 during the incident.

Acting on information obtained from the WhatsApp post, the police traced Avenyo to his hideout, where he was arrested.

Avenyo appeared before the Gbese District Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing. He was subsequently convicted on his own plea.

During sentencing, the convict appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy, promising to work to refund the stolen cash and replace the phone.

The court, however, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.

The convict, Bismark Owusu, was charged with causing unlawful harm and pleaded guilty to the offence. 

Prosecuting, Inspector of Police Patrick Essien told the court, presided over by Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant, Bright Akwasi Aboagye, was a student residing at Bompieso. 

On October 7, at about 12:00 noon, the complainant was riding a tricycle at Bompieso with one Ishmael on board when he suddenly saw a group of illegal miners holding a young man, accusing him of stealing gold-bearing stones. 

Inspector Essien said Owusu was among the group and that the suspected thief was being beaten when the complainant intervened and struck one of the attackers to stop the assault. 

The prosecutor said the illegal miners, unhappy with the complainant’s intervention, warned him to leave the scene. 

According to the prosecution, Owusu also took offence at the complainant’s conduct and picked a fight with him and Ishmael, but they were separated, and each went their separate ways. 

Later that same day, the complainant and Ishmael were at a game centre when Owusu confronted them and warned that the earlier confrontation was not over. 

Inspector Essien told the court that Owusu later attacked the complainant, slashing him twice on the back with a blade before fleeing when the victim started bleeding. 

He said residents who rushed to the scene sent the complainant to the Bompieso Clinic for medical treatment, after which he reported the incident to the police. 

Owusu was arrested the same day and handed over to the police for prosecution.

Blessed Manu, alias ‘Bullet’, a 27-year-old trader; Akwasi Antwi, alias ‘Malonzy’, a 19-year-old unemployed man; and Nicholas Addai, alias ‘Banko’, a 25-year-old electrician, pleaded guilty to the charge and were convicted on their own plea.

Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi, presenting the facts before the court presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau, said the complainant, Enock Boateng, is a businessman residing at Sepaase-Adwafo, while the convicts lived at Sepaase in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

He explained that on November 15, 2025, at about 06:00 hours, the complainant discovered that his shop had been burgled. Items stolen included 30 keypad phones, two iPhones, five smartphones, 50 pairs of rubber slippers, 10 pairs of sandals, phone accessories, and a television decoder, all valued at GH¢40,000.

A report was made to the Sepaase police, and with the help of informants, Manu and Antwi were arrested on suspicion. In their caution statements, they admitted the offence and named Addai as their accomplice. Addai was subsequently arrested from his hideout on November 29, 2025.

The prosecution said Addai also admitted the offence in his caution statement, and all three led the police to recover some of the stolen items from their respective rooms. Investigations further revealed that the trio had gained access to the shop by cutting through the back, which they used as both entry and exit points to carry out the theft.

Cidi, who was reportedly known in the community for involvement in prohibited drug activities, had previously drawn the attention of law enforcement due to repeated disturbances in the neighbourhood. He had also been cautioned by ASP Samuel Assifuah Boah, a senior officer stationed in the area.

The incident occurred on July 7, 2025, when Cidi confronted the officer, prompting ASP Boah to fire a warning shot to deter him. Cidi fled but returned the following morning.

While escorting his children to school, ASP Boah was reportedly ambushed by Cidi, who wielded a jackknife. Despite multiple warning shots, the attacker managed to overpower and injure the officer before fleeing again.

Police quickly launched an operation and arrested Cidi shortly after the assault. He was subsequently tried, convicted, and sentenced to four years in prison for the attack.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Boadu questioned why a Chief Justice would make such statements, suggesting that they raise doubts about the safety and fairness of the judicial system.

“Are we safe in this country if a Chief Justice claims that after confirmation, his decisions might be influenced by fear or personal interest?” he asked. “If someone is not committed to applying the laws impartially, it is worrying. How many cases will come before him and other judges who might base their sentences on fear of relatives or personal gain instead of the law?” he questioned.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Baffoe-Bonnie described the decision on the high-profile case from his early years on the bench as guided both by the law and the need to protect the public.

“The judges and magistrates are trained and follow sentencing guidelines, but sometimes they have to go beyond them. In my youthful days, I gave somebody 70 years — Atta Ayi,” he said.

He further explained that while sentencing guidelines provide a general framework, judges occasionally need to exercise discretion based on the circumstances of a case.

“I gave him 70 years. And what I told myself was that if Atta Ayi was given 30 years and he comes back, my family will be the first he will attack. So by the time he comes back after 70 years, I will be dead and gone,” he said with a chuckle, drawing laughter from the audience.

However, Mr. Boadu acknowledged the role of prison in rehabilitation, stating, “Prison is for reform. I know people who come out of prison reformed becoming accountants, lawyers, and productive members of society and they do not return to their previous lives.”

He added that in countries with strong democratic systems, a nominee making such statements might face significant challenges in gaining approval.

“If this was another country, and the vetting process was not a rubber stamp, there is no way a Chief Justice would be approved after making such remarks,” he said.

Yevugah, charged with stealing, pleaded not guilty. The court, presided over by Susana Eduful, at the end of the trial, found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

The prosecution, led by Ebenezer Teye Okuffo, said the complainant, Abdul Mumuni Ahmed, was a herbalist who used moringa snuff as part of his herbal medicine.

Yevugah was an employee of the complainant, and they all resided at Nima in Accra. Prosecution said the complainant employed Yevugah to assist in the moringa snuff production.

The complainant bought 419 cartons of empty bottles with covers, valued at GHC336,327, to be used for moringa snuff products, out of which he collected 277 cartons from the company.

Prosecution said a few days after bringing the containers, the complainant fell ill and was unable to produce the moringa snuff to fill the containers.

He, therefore, rented two rooms at Nima, where Yevugah assisted in parking the said boxes of containers into the rooms, and a spare key was given to Yevugah for safekeeping.

On June 11, 2022, at about 1915 hours, the complainant received information from one Suraji Alhassan Ahmed, a witness in the case, that Yevugah had brought in a vehicle, loaded all the empty bottles onto it, and sent them away.

Prosecution said the complainant rushed to Yevugah’s house, where he fortunately met him, and escorted him to the police station in Nima to make an official complaint.

During investigations, Yevugah admitted the offence in his investigation caution statement and told the police that he took 100 boxes of empty bottles, produced his personal snuff, and sent them to Nigeria to be sold with the complainant’s consent.

Not since World War Two Nazi collaborationist leader Philippe Pétain was jailed for treason in 1945 has any French ex-leader gone behind bars.

Sarkozy, who was president from 2007-2012, has appealed against his jail term at La Santé prison, where he will occupy a small cell in the its isolation wing.

More than 100 people applauded and shouted “Nicolas!” as he left his villa in the exclusive 16th district of Paris, holding his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy by the hand.

His son Louis, 28, had appealed to supporters for a show of support, while another son, Pierre, called for a message of love – “nothing else, please”.

Nicolas Sarkozy, 70, was driven through the entrance of the notoriously overcrowded 19th-Century prison in the Montparnasse district south of the River Seine at 09:40 local time (07:40 GMT), while dozens of police officers cordoned off most of the surrounding streets.

He continues to protest his innocence in the highly controversial Libyan money affair and posted a message on X as he was driven to the jail, saying: “I have no doubt. Truth will prevail. But how crushing the price will have been.”

“With unwavering strength I tell [the French people] it is not a former president they are locking up this morning – it is an innocent man,” he wrote. “Do not feel sorry for me because my wife and my children are by my side… but this morning I feel deep sorrow for a France humiliated by a will for revenge.”

Moments after Sarkozy entered jail, his lawyer Christophe Ingrain said a request for his release had been filed. Nothing justified his imprisonment, said Mr Ingrain, adding: “He’ll be inside for at least three weeks or a month.”

Sarkozy has said he wants no special treatment at La Santé prison, although he has been put in its isolation section for his own safety as other inmates are infamous drugs dealers or have been convicted for terror offences.

Small cell with TV, and one hour’s daily exercise

Sarkozy’s cell in the prison’s isolation wing is believed to be on the top floor and will measure between 9-11 sq m (95-120 sq ft). There had earlier been talk of him serving his term in the another wing for “vulnerable people”, where other VIPs have been jailed in the past.

He will have a toilet, a shower, a desk, a small electric hob and a small TV, for which he will have to pay a monthly €14 (£12) fee, and the right to a small fridge.

The former president has the right to receive information from the outside world and family visits as well as written and phone contact.

But he is in effect in solitary confinement, allowed just one hour a day for exercise, by himself in the wing’s segregated courtyard.

“Conditions of detention in an isolation wing are pretty hard,” La Santé ex-deputy head Flavie Rault told BFMTV. “You are alone, all the time. The only contact you have is with prison staff. You never come across another detainee for security reasons and there’s a type of social isolation which makes life difficult”.

At the end of last week, Sarkozy was received at the Élysée Palace by President Emmanuel Macron, who told reporters on Monday “it was normal that on a human level I should receive one of my predecessors in that context”.

Macron stressed on Tuesday that it was not his role “to comment on or criticise judicial decisions”, but he said it was normal that for many in France the sight of “a president jailed by this judicial decision would provoke comment”.

In a further measure of official support for the ex-president, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said he would go to visit him in prison as part of his role in ensuring Sarkozy’s safety and the proper functioning of the jail.

“I cannot be insensitive to a man’s distress,” he added.

Ever since he left office in 2012, Sarkozy has been dogged by criminal inquiries and for months had to wear an electronic tag around his ankle after a conviction last December for trying to bribe a magistrate for confidential information about a separate case.

Late next month, France’s highest administrative court will give its verdict on Sarkozy’s appeal against a six-month jail term in another illegal campaign financing case known as the Bygmalion affair.

Ahead of his arrival at La Santé prison, Sarkozy gave a series of media interviews, telling La Tribune: “I’m not afraid of prison. I’ll keep my head held high, including at the prison gates.”

Sarkozy has always denied doing anything wrong in a case involving allegations that his 2007 presidential campaign was funded by millions of euros in Libyan cash.

The former centre-right leader was cleared of personally receiving the money but convicted of criminal association with two close aides, Brice Hortefeux and Claude Guéant, for their role in secret campaign financing from the Libyans.

The two men both had talks with Gadaffi’s intelligence chief and brother-in-law in 2005, a meeting arranged by a Franco-Lebanese intermediary called Ziad Tiakeddine, who died in Lebanon shortly before Sarkozy’s conviction.

As he lodged an appeal, Sarkozy is still considered innocent but he has been told he must go to jail in view of the “exceptional seriousness of the facts”.

Sarkozy said he would take two books with him into prison, a life of Jesus by Jean-Christian Petitfils and the Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas’s classic story of a man wrongly imprisoned who escapes to wreak vengeance on his prosecutors.

Ama Salifu, who is also a trader, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on her own plea by the court, presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

Police Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa, presenting the facts of the case to the court, described the convict as a confident trickster.

He said that on April 17 this year, the convict met one Josephina Owusuaa, the first complainant, on her way to a laundry at the Abuakwa SDA junction.

The convict stopped her and introduced herself as a prophetess with a message from God for her.

She then instructed the complainant to leave her bag, which contained GH¢1,200 in cash and an iPhone XR valued at GH¢3,000, with a trader at the junction and go to a certain woman at the Abuakwa Shell filling station for a spiritual message.

The prosecution said the complainant complied but could not find the said woman. When she returned, both the convict and her bag were gone.

She went to the trader for her bag but was informed that the convict had posed as her mother and collected it. The case was subsequently reported to the Abuakwa Police.

According to the prosecution, in early August 2025, the convict again introduced herself as a prophetess to a 16-year-old girl at the Abuakwa market, telling her that her mother, Priscilla Owusu Achiaa, the second complainant, was under a serious spiritual attack and needed deliverance.

The girl led the convict home, where she collected 29 pieces of new material garments, two kente garments, two pairs of ladies’ slippers, and four pieces of wax prints—all valued at GH¢20,000—belonging to the second complainant and her sister.

She also took an iPhone 6s valued at GH¢900 and GH¢170 in cash, claiming she needed the items for intercessory prayers to aid their deliverance.

Chief Inspector Ayimbisa said the convict went into hiding after collecting the items until October 13, 2025, when she was spotted and arrested at Abuakwa-Manhyia.

In her caution statement, she admitted to the theft and told the police that she had sold the items to someone at Kumasi-Krofrom but could not lead them to the buyer.

After further investigations, she was charged and brought before the court.

A driver’s mate, Isaac Peprah, 26, has been sentenced to six months in prison for stealing four laptops and their chargers, a Bluetooth speaker, and a table-top fridge from the Ministry of Finance.

Peprah, also known as Happiness, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing at the Adabraka District Court and was convicted on his own plea. He, however, denied charges of unlawful entry to commit a crime and causing unlawful damage, which were subsequently struck out by the trial judge, Mrs. Abena Owusu Omenyo. The prosecution also withdrew the two charges following the conviction.

The court heard that on August 17, 2025, at around 5:00 a.m., Peprah unlawfully entered the Ministry of Finance Annex “E” Treasury Block by climbing the fence wall. He damaged five louvre blades to gain access to a first-floor office and stole two Dell laptops. He then used office keys to open another office, stealing a Dell and a Lenovo laptop with their chargers, a West Pool table-top fridge, and a Bluetooth speaker. The fridge was temporarily hidden at a corner of the Ministry’s car park.

Peprah was spotted by a witness returning from jogging, who questioned him about the contents of his bag. He attempted to flee toward the Ghana Revenue Authority, Customs Division Head Office, leaving the bag with the laptops on the road. Emmanuel Teye, a Customs officer on duty, joined the chase, and Peprah was apprehended in front of the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment offices.

Peprah later led police to the hidden fridge, which was retrieved and documented. In his caution statement, made in the presence of an independent witness, he admitted to the offence. The recovered laptops were returned to Ministry personnel in court.

The prosecution was led by Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, while the complainant, Mahmud Ahmed, serves as Acting Head of Security at the Ministry of Finance. Peprah is a resident of Kokomba, Agbogbloshie.

According to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Asare was arrested on June 9, 2025, for destroying parapet beams and accessories at the interchange.

He was convicted of “causing unlawful damage” under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29).

The Ministry expressed concern over the rising cases of vandalism and vehicular crashes that destroy public road facilities, particularly traffic lights. It reminded the public that damaging public infrastructure is a criminal offence.

The Ministry further assured that it will continue collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to ensure offenders face the full force of the law.

Kingston, whose legal name is Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were each convicted by a federal jury in March of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Turner was sentenced last month to five years in prison.

Before U.S. Judge David Leibowitz handed down Kingston’s sentence, the singer apologised to the judge and said he had learned from his actions.

His attorney asked if he could self-surrender at a later date due to health issues, but the judge ordered him taken into custody immediately. Kingston, who was wearing a black suit and white shirt, removed his suit jacket and was handcuffed and led from the courtroom.

Kingston, 35, and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided Kingston’s rented mansion in suburban Fort Lauderdale.

Turner was taken into custody during the raid, while Kingston was arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California’s Mojave Desert, where he was performing.

According to court records, Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of high-end merchandise.

After negotiating deals, Kingston would invite the sellers to one of his high-end Florida homes and promise to feature them and their products on social media.

Investigators said that when it came time to pay, Kingston or his mother would text the victims fake wire receipts for the luxury merchandise, which included a bulletproof Escalade, watches, and a 19-foot (5.9-meter) LED TV, investigators said.

When the funds never cleared, victims often contacted Kingston and Turner repeatedly, but were either never paid or received money only after filing lawsuits or contacting law enforcement.

Kingston, who was born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, shot to fame at age 17 with the 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls,” which laid his lyrics over Ben E. King’s 1961 song “Stand By Me.” His other hits include 2007’s “Take You There” and 2009’s “Fire Burning.”

According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the robbery occurred around 5:30 a.m. on July 10, near the Golden Pride Preparatory School.

Samuel is said to have attacked a female victim and forcibly snatched her handbag, which contained an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a purse with cash.

Following intelligence-led investigations and support from the victim, police tracked Samuel to his hideout at Ngleshie Amanfro, a suburb of Accra, and arrested him the same day.

During the operation, officers recovered the stolen iPhone along with other suspected stolen items, including a Dell laptop, several mobile phones, AirPods, wristwatches, and a gold necklace.

Samuel was arraigned before the Ofaakor Circuit Court on July 15, where he pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and causing harm.

The court subsequently sentenced him to 14 years in prison for robbery and 5 years for causing harm, with the sentences to run concurrently.

1. The Central East Regional Police Command has on Tuesday 15 July, 2025 secured conviction of accused person, Kolie Samuel, aged 25.
2. The convict Kolie Samuel on July 10, 2025 at about 5:30am, at Millennium City near Golden Pride Preparatory School in the Gomoa East of the Central Region robbed a female victim and made away with her handbag containing an iphone 16 pro max and a purse which contained an unspecified amount of money.
3. Through intelligence-led investigations and also with the assistance of the victim, Kolie Samuel was tracked and arrested at his hide-out at Ngleshie Amanfro a suburb of Accra on 10 July, 2025. A search conducted on him led to the retrieval of the victims Iphone 16 pro max. Other items found in his possession included one Dell laptop, 2 Itel mobile phones, one Nokia phone, one Alcatel mobile phone, one vodafone WiFi, two pairs of Airpods, one gold necklace, three wrist watches, one ladies’ purse, one wallet containing a health insurance card bearing the name Kwapong Sahnan and ten memory cards all believed to be proceeds of other robbery activities he may have embarked upon.
4. After thorough investigations, He was put before the Ofaakor Circuit Court on, 15  July, 2025 where he pleaded guilty to the charges of robbery and causing harm and was subsequently sentenced to 14 and 5 years imprisonment respectively, Sentences are to run concurrently.

Awuah pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted on his own plea.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh told the court, presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant, Solomon Donkor, is a farmer residing at Aboso, while Awuah lives at Ndadieso, a suburb of Aboso.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 19, 2025, around 10:30 p.m., when the complainant and his family had locked their homes and retired to bed.

At about 2:00 a.m., the complainant’s elder brother—who is a key witness in the case—woke up to pray and detected smoke in his room. Upon stepping outside, he discovered that Awuah had set some clothes on fire and was attempting to spread the flames to the electricity meter box in an apparent attempt to burn down the entire house.

The witness raised an alarm, prompting residents, including the complainant, to rush to the scene. They managed to apprehend Awuah and handed him over to the police at Aboso, where a formal complaint was lodged.

During a search, police found a lighter in the convict’s possession. Upon interrogation, Awuah admitted to the offence and blamed his actions on the influence of alcohol and Indian hemp.

Dziwornu pleaded guilty with the explanation that he had sexual intercourse with the victim due to the influence of alcohol, but the Court said his explanation could not exonerate him of the crime, and therefore entered a plea of guilty for the convict.

Chief Inspector Charles Aziati, Prosecuting told the Hohoe Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Lambert Y. Keriba that the act of the convict was “barbaric, unacceptable and deviant” to ethics and culture.

He prayed the Court to give the convict severe punishment to deter others.

Chief Inspector Aziati, presenting the facts, said the victim was unemployed living in the same town with the complainant, a social worker, while the convict was a farmer and a biological brother to the victim.

He said mother of the convict and victim died, when the victim was very young, so it was the convict, who took care of her and the two stayed together at where the convict resided.

Chief Inspector Aziati said in the year 2020 to 2024, the convict started having sexual intercourse with the victim and in the process had terminated three pregnancies, adding that in March 2025, victim left the convict’s place to her boyfriend’s place with her three and half year-old daughter.

He said the convict traced the victim to her boyfriend’s house and forcibly took her daughter away.

Chief Inspector Aziati said the victim confided in the complainant being her neighbour, who led the victim to lodge a complaint with the Police, leading to the arrest of the convict, who was in custody of the victim’s daughter enroute to Aflao, on May 17, 2025, and subsequently handed over to the Hohoe Police.

He said during investigations, the convict admitted having had sexual intercourse with the victim.

Akwasi Kuffour pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea.

Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu that the complainant was a police officer stationed at Abuakwa, near Akropong.

He explained that in 2023, Kuffour was arraigned before the Akropong District Court on charges of assaulting a public officer, resisting arrest, and causing damage.

He was subsequently remanded into prison custody.

However, while exiting the magistrate’s chamber, Kuffour took to his heels and escaped, going into hiding.

According to the prosecution, he was rearrested in April 2024 at Kumasi-Tanoso for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

During his caution statement, he confessed to escaping from lawful custody.

Following further investigations, he was charged and brought before the court, leading to his conviction and sentencing.

He appeared before the Denu Circuit Court on 2nd May 2025, where he pleaded guilty simpliciter to the charge.

As presented by the prosecution, the complainant, Madam Christy Kwau, is a trader and the biological mother of the victim (name withheld), a 17-year-old Senior High School student.

Both the complainant and the accused are divorced, and the victim had lived with the convict since infancy.

On 22nd April 2025 at approximately 10:00 am, the victim went to the complainant at Sepenukope and refused to return to the accused.

Upon questioning, the victim disclosed that in March 2025 at about 4:20 am, and again on 17th April 2025 at 4:30 am, the accused had forcibly had sexual intercourse with her in their living room.

He had also threatened her against disclosing the act, warning that she would “risk dying” if she did.

The complainant subsequently reported the case to the Aflao Police Station, and a medical form was issued for the victim to undergo examination.

The accused (now convicted) was arrested and interrogated on 30th April 2025, during which he confessed to having sexual intercourse with the victim on three occasions.

The convict was a teacher at a private basic school in the Ketu South Municipality.

Under Section 105 of Act 29: A male of not less than 16 years of age who has carnal knowledge of a female whom he knows to be his granddaughter, daughter (emphasis added), sister […] commits a criminal offence and is liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than 25 years.

Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were arrested after Smith’s daughter, Joshlin, went missing from outside her home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February last year.

Appollis and Van Rhyn were also found guilty on Friday of kidnapping and trafficking Joshlin. All three had previously pleaded not guilty to to these charges.

Joshlin’s disappearance sent shockwaves across South Africa and despite a highly publicised search for her, she is yet to be found.

The conviction follows his guilty plea to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court on March 5, 2025.

Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, prosecuting, said Tahiru is a Nigerien who resides at Fitter Line, a suburb of Ashaiman.

He explained that on February 26, 2025, the Gbetsile District Police were on their usual night patrol duty when they spotted him holding a black polythene bag containing some heavy items.

The police became suspicious and apprehended him. Upon searching the bag, they discovered six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, valued at GH¢3,250, belonging to Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

The prosecutor stated that the police subsequently arrested Tahiru and sent him to the Afienya Police Station. During interrogation, he admitted to stealing the items from some residents in the area.

He was therefore charged with stealing and placed in custody before being processed for court.

Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region of GWL, expressed gratitude to the court for the judgment. He noted that the company has recently faced a rise in meter theft, which has negatively impacted its operations.

He appealed to residents to be vigilant and report such suspected individuals to the police.

He also cautioned scrap dealers and others engaged in stealing GWL installations to desist from the act, warning that those caught would face the full rigors of the law.

Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been jailed for 10 weeks after he admitted punching a man to the ground in his Cheshire constituency.

Amesbury, 55, who represents Runcorn and Helsby as an independent MP, pleaded guilty to assaulting 45-year-old Paul Fellows after video footage emerged showing the confrontation.

He had his Labour whip removed after the incident in Frodsham, Cheshire, which happened in the early hours of 26 October.

Sitting at Chester Magistrates’ Court, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram said a pre-sentence report showed Amesbury’s actions were the result of a “anger and loss of emotional control”.

Passing sentence, the magistrate said the immediate custodial sentence was “necessary both as a punishment and a deterrent”.

A 40-year-old trader who hit the head of a public servant with an empty crate, leading to his death, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

This was after a seven-member jury returned a verdict of guilty on Veronica Djoazaa, the trader, at the end of the trial.

Djoazaa, a bar operator, is said to have thrown the empty crate, which hit the head of Anthony Apurum, now deceased.

The incident occurred at Zenu in Ashaiman on October 2, 2021, following a misunderstanding between the two.

The court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, sentenced Djoazaa accordingly.

Djoazaa was held on the charge of manslaughter.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Anthony Apurum, aged 48, was a public servant who resided in Zenu, Ashaiman, with his family.

On October 2, 2021, at about 7:30 pm, the deceased went to a nearby drinking spot operated by the accused.

The court was told that while the deceased was drinking a bottle of Guinness, a misunderstanding ensued between them, during which Djoazaa picked up an empty Coca-Cola crate and threw it at the deceased.

According to the prosecution, the crate hit the deceased’s head, causing severe head injuries and profuse bleeding.

The deceased made a report to the Police and was issued with a medical form to attend the hospital for treatment.

On the same day, the deceased was treated and discharged and presented the medical report to the Police.

On October 8, 2021, the deceased’s condition deteriorated, and he was rushed to the Tema General Hospital, where he was admitted for further treatment but passed away.

On December 12, 2021, a post-mortem was conducted by Dr. Eric Dumfeh, a pathologist at the Tema General Hospital.

The pathologist attributed the cause of death to blunt head trauma, describing it as “unnatural.”

On the same day, Djoazaa was arrested for investigation.

The court heard that during investigations, the accused was taken to the crime scene where she identified the empty crate, which was retrieved.

A 25-year-old painter who stole a laptop from an office at La Kojo Sardine in Accra has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Appearing before an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, Kelvin Boateng pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann, convicted Boateng on his own plea.

Boateng, however, broke down and cried as police handcuffed him and escorted him out of the courtroom to begin his sentence.

Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, said the complainant, Mc Dennis Appau, a graphic designer, resided in Kojo Sardine, a suburb of La in Accra.

Chief Inspector Alorwu said Boateng also resided in Agbogboloshie.

The prosecution stated that on December 31, 2024, at about 10:30 am, the complainant and a witness in the case were working in an office at La Kojo Sardine.

The court heard that Boateng scaled the fence wall into the office premises and entered one of the offices, where he took an HP laptop.

On his way out, the prosecution said a witness saw Boateng and raised the alarm.

Boateng bolted with the laptop and hid in a nearby uncompleted building.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant and other witnesses mounted a search and, in the process, found Boateng with the laptop.

The prosecution said Boateng was nabbed and escorted to the police station for further investigation.

During interrogation, the prosecution said Boateng admitted to the offence.

Gerrard Dwomo pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to reappear before the court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District on January 29, 2025.

Before the bail bond can be executed, the police will inspect the address, AP13-Apatrapa, that he provided as his residence to confirm its validity.

Police Chief Inspector Ruth Gborson, presenting the facts of the case, identified Juliana Owusu Gyamfi as the complainant, a resident of Apatrapa.

Chief Gborson explained that on January 11, at around 7 a.m., the complainant discovered that GH¢6,000 had been stolen from her handbag, which she had left in front of her dressing mirror.

Upon reviewing footage from her doorbell camera, she saw the accused stealing the money and reported the theft to the Abuakwa police.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a bracelet, waist bag, and ring — items visible on the accused in the footage — in his room.

In his caution statement, the accused denied the theft, but after additional investigation, he was charged and brought before the court.

She pleaded guilty and was convicted on her own plea

Prosecuting Police Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh told the court presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah that Elizabeth Badu, the complainant was unemployed and a resident of Wassa Agona, while Awuah lived at Dompim Pepesa, both in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

On November 9, 2024, at about 1400 hours, Awuah went to the complainant’s house and requested to see one Nana Nkansah, the complainant’s husband.

The complainant told Awuah the husband was not available, and she pretended to be leaving, but returned and hurriedly entered the complainant’s room, stole the items mentioned and left.

Sergeant Assan-Donkoh informed the court that on November 11, 2024, Awuah was nabbed and sent to the police station where she confessed to the crime in her investigation caution statement.

Stephen Otu, 32, popularly known as Atta, pleaded guilty to the charge raised against him and begged the court to have mercy on him.

However, the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, found Otu guilty and sentenced him accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts.

Chief Inspector of Police Abraham Ayitey, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, a 38-year-old Pragia rider, was the father of the victim who was in primary six.

He said the complainant, victim and the convict resided in the same area at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.

According to the prosecution, about two months ago, the convict met the victim in Wassa Akropong township and asked for her age, and the victim told him she was 12 years old.

Chief Inspector Ayitey said in the process, the convict lured the victim into his room, assaulted her sexually, and gave her GH¢20.00 after the act, and warned her not to inform her parents.

The court heard that Otu took advantage of the victim and on three different occasions he had sexual intercourse with the victim.

The prosecution said on November 24, 2024, at about 1700 hours, the victim’s mother noticed she was pregnant, and asked the victim who was responsible, and she mentioned Otu as the one who had been having sex with her.

He said a report was made to the police and the complainant was given a police medical form to take the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Chief Inspector Ayitey said the medical form submitted to the police after the victim had been examined proved that she was two months pregnant.

He said Otu was arrested and detained to assist investigations.

Appiah who sold the tricycle motorbike for GH¢15,000 and collected GH¢7,500 as part payment pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted accordingly by the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu.

Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, who led the prosecution, said the complainant, Rockson Dapaah, a mason resided at Nyamekyekrom, a suburb of Bogoso, while Appiah resided at Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

He said that in February 2024 the complainant bought an Apsonic tricycle motorbike with registration number M-23-WT 1206 for commercial purposes and handed over the same to Isaac Akuffo, a witness in the case.

On July 20, 2024, while Akuffo was working the tricycle developed a fault and he informed the complainant who then directed him to see one master Koduah, a mechanic.

The prosecution said on the same day at about 1830 hours, Akuffo went to park the faulty machine in Master Koduah’s shop in his absence and left for his house, but when he returned the next day, the tricycle was missing.

Akuffo informed the complainant, and he reported the matter to the Bogoso police, on September 14, 2024, Adu Gyamfi was arrested at Bogoso with the stolen tricycle motorbike.

He said during the investigation, Adu Gyamfi revealed to the police that he bought the Apsonic tricycle motorbike from the convict for GH¢15,000 made part payment of GH¢7,500, and promised to settle the balance if he produced the documents.

Chief Superintendent Odonkor said Adu Gyamfi, was granted police enquiry bail to assist in investigation.

On October 14, 2024, Adu Gyamfi alerted the police that he lured Appiah, and he was in a vehicle coming from Tarkwa Nsuaem to Bogoso for the money.

Prosecution said at about 1130 hours Appiah was arrested by the police at Timtimhwe police post near Bogoso and handed over to the police in Bogoso.

During interrogation, Appiah told the police that on July 21, 2024, one Albert Koduah from Bogoso called him that he was bringing an Apsonic tricycle motorbike to Tarkwa but had run out of fuel and abandoned the machine on the Insu-Siding to Huni-Valley Road and left for his house.

He said Appiah alleged he secretly went for the tricycle and sold it to Adu Gyamfi, but he failed to assist the police in apprehending Albert Koduah for prosecution.

His arrest in New York came amid a series of civil suits alleging sexual assault and physical violence, some going back to the 1990s.

More than two dozen people have filed lawsuits against the rapper, accusing him of using his influence in the entertainment industry to do everything from drugging, assaulting and raping people.

The latest batch of lawsuits include allegations from two men who were underage at the time of the alleged sexual assaults. Both described being hopeful that Mr Combs could help jumpstart their careers in the entertainment industry.

The Harlem-born rapper has denied all the allegations, both those laid out in lawsuits and in his federal indictment.
