Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt, Iran and Colombia, was officially unveiled on Thursday at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on a four-month contract. The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March following Ghana’s consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.

Speaking to SuperSport Blitz after the unveiling, Pappoe, a former Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, said the timing of the appointment demanded a coach with proven experience and strong leadership.

“We are in a situation where we had to appoint a coach in less than three months before the start of the World Cup, but we are there,” he said.

“Men are meant to solve problems, so I believe Carlos Queiroz is the man for the situation we are in now. He is a mature person with a pedigree, someone who has confidence, realistic, who commands respect and above all, he is humble, and these are important things to me.”

He added that Queiroz’s profile makes him well-suited for the immediate task of preparing the team for the global tournament.

“He appears well-suited for the job and the situation we are in, so we all have to pray that he succeeds,” he added.

Queiroz is expected to begin his tenure next month with a friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will head to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico for their fifth appearance at the tournament, drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After early exits in 2014 and 2022, expectations are growing for a stronger showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with steering the four-time African champions beyond the group stage.

It’s a privilege and honour to be part of Ghana football – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/its-a-privilege-and-honour-to-be-part-of-ghana-football-carlos-queiroz/ Sat, 25 Apr 2026 09:42:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655575 Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has described his appointment as head coach of Ghana national football team as both a privilege and a deeply personal milestone.

The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo on a short-term four-month contract and is tasked with leading Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup later this year.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday in Accra at the Alisa Hotel, shortly after being introduced to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, at the Sports Ministry.

Speaking at the unveiling, the experienced Portuguese tactician expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting his emotional connection to the African continent.

“I just want to say thank you. I just want to express how I feel inside my heart now,” Queiroz said.

“To be part of Ghana’s sports and family is a privilege and honour for me. I know that some of you know that I have strong African roots.

“I was born and raised in Mozambique, and so leading Ghana, an African country, to the World Cup is unforgettable and a memory in my life,” the former Real Madrid head coach added.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, face a stern test in Group L, where they will come up against England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, expectations are mounting for a stronger performance this time, with Queiroz charged with guiding the four-time African champions beyond the early stages.

Chris Hughton opens up on prostate cancer battle https://www.adomonline.com/chris-hughton-opens-up-on-prostate-cancer-battle/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 12:50:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655450 Former Chris Hughton has revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year but has since undergone successful surgery and is now cancer-free.

The 67-year-old received the diagnosis in April and underwent an operation in May to remove his prostate. The condition was detected early, and he has since made a strong recovery.

Hughton, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland defender who later managed Newcastle United and Brighton in the Premier League, said he is now in good health and hopes to use his experience to raise awareness about the disease.

“The news certainly didn’t scare me,” he said. “I know everyone is different, but my first impression was ‘I’ll be fine.’ I didn’t instantly think this is probably just going to kill me. I just thought, ‘OK, we’ll have to do what we have to do.’”

The former Black Stars coach explained that the warning signs first emerged during a routine health check while he was in charge at Brighton, arranged through the League Managers Association.

Further monitoring showed elevated PSA levels, and a later scan confirmed cancer. He was considered at higher risk due to his age, family history, and ethnicity—factors linked to increased prostate cancer risk among Black men.

“I had very good advice, and all the treatment options were given to me, and I decided to have my prostate removed. The recovery has gone really well,” he said.

“I’m one year post-operation, and I feel good. It’s all gone very well. I’ve got a lot of energy. Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it’s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well.”

“I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place,” he added.

Hughton, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Tottenham and earned 53 caps for the Republic of Ireland, has previously managed clubs including Birmingham City, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest.

He took charge of the Ghana national football team after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but was dismissed in 2024 following the team’s group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Barcelona duo David Oduro and Abdul Aziz set for Black Stars call-up for Mexico friendly https://www.adomonline.com/barcelona-duo-david-oduro-and-abdul-aziz-set-for-black-stars-call-up-for-mexico-friendly/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 12:22:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655424 FC Barcelona Atlètic duo David Oduro and Abdul Aziz Issah are in line for potential inclusion in Ghana’s squad for their upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team next month, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana national football team will take on Mexico on May 22 in their first warm-up match ahead of the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Reports from SPORT indicate that both players are expected to be named in the squad.

However, their participation could hinge on Barcelona Atlètic’s progress in the promotion playoffs, with the Spanish club potentially requesting their release if they advance further in their campaign.

Aziz Issah has been one of the standout performers for Barça B this season, scoring four goals and establishing himself as a regular starter under coach Juliano Belletti.

The midfielder has already featured for Ghana at the senior level, playing 30 minutes in a 2025 Unity Cup friendly against Trinidad and Tobago in the United Kingdom.

Oduro, meanwhile, is close to full fitness after an injury setback but has also enjoyed consistent minutes this season. A call-up would mark his first appearance in the senior national team setup.

Aziz, currently in his second loan spell at Barcelona, is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs, while Oduro remains tied to the Catalan outfit until 2027.

The meeting with Mexico will offer Ghana a key early test as they build towards the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign on June 17 against Panama, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz, recently appointed to lead the side, is under growing pressure to guide Ghana beyond the group stage following early exits in 2014 and 2022.

Ghana targets Africa’s AI hub with launch of national strategy – Sam George https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-targets-africas-ai-hub-with-launch-of-national-strategy-sam-george/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 12:12:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655440 The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced that Ghana is positioning itself to become Africa’s leading hub for Artificial Intelligence.

He made the declaration at the official launch of Ghana’s National AI Strategy on Friday, April 24, describing it as a major step toward harnessing emerging technologies for national development.

The strategy provides a comprehensive framework to guide the development, deployment and regulation of AI systems across key sectors of the economy.

It is expected to drive innovation while ensuring ethical standards, data protection and inclusive access to technology.

Addressing stakeholders at the event, Mr George stressed the importance of collaboration among government, the private sector, academia and the public to fully realise Ghana’s AI ambitions.

He noted that artificial intelligence is already transforming industries such as healthcare, education, agriculture, finance and governance, and should no longer be viewed as a future concept.

“I trust that the judiciary will guide our ethical and legal application of artificial intelligence. Ghana stands capable and ready to lead and become Africa’s AI hub by strengthening collaboration between government, industry, academia and citizens,” he said.

The Minister added that government is committed to building a future-ready economy driven by technology and innovation.

The National AI Strategy will also prioritise capacity building through the promotion of STEM education, support for research institutions and the development of innovation hubs to create local solutions tailored to Ghana’s needs.

The 73-year-old has been handed a four-month contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz replaced Otto Addo, who was sacked in March after Black Stars’ back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.

The former Real Madrid coach has been tasked with improving the team and making an impact ahead of the 23rd edition of the global showpiece.

Here are 10 key things he said during his unveiling:

1. I am ready for the job as Black Stars head coach

2. This will be the most-challenging job in my career

3. I am a winning coach who is not concerned about style of play

4. I want to see my players fight as a team without the ball and adapt with the ball

5. My challenge is to win the next game and win the next game

6. We have to bring in the right players and make the right decisions

7. I cannot make promises, but I can assure you that we will be ready against Panama

8. We will create fair opportunities for local players

9. I will select players who are capable, experienced and fit

10. Five new backroom staff will join the technical team while John Pailtsil, Fatawu Dauda and Desmond Ofei will keep their respective roles

You will be foolish to defend GFA’s decision to use Black Stars coach’s residence as a technical directorate office – George Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/you-will-be-foolish-to-defend-gfas-decision-to-use-black-stars-coachs-residence-as-a-technical-directorate-office-george-afriyie/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 10:54:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655384 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has strongly criticised the governing body over its decision to convert the official residence of the Black Stars head coach into a technical directorate office.

The controversy follows revelations by a Senior Communications Officer of the GFA, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, that the five-bedroom property in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, previously reserved for the national team coach, has been repurposed for administrative use.

The development has triggered widespread debate, with sections of the public urging authorities to ensure newly appointed Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is allocated the facility instead.

However, the move has received backing from GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo, who defended the decision in an interview with Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

Afriyie, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, did not hold back in his response, describing the decision as unacceptable and condemning those who support it.

“You have the Ghana Football Association (GFA) headquarters at Osu, while the technical centre is in Prampram,” he said.

“The Black Stars coach’s residence, located in a prime area like the Airport residential area, and it cannot be used as a technical directorate. There was a reason why the government decided to get a house for the Black Stars coach, and so this decision is wrong.

“You will be foolish to defend the Ghana Football Association’s decision to use Black Stars coach’s official residence as a technical directorate office, and anyone who defends this act is foolish. I stand by my words,” Mr Afriyie added.

Reports indicate that Queiroz, who has signed a short-term four-month contract, is expected to stay in a hotel ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The development adds another layer to ongoing discussions about the management of national team resources and preparations for the global tournament.

2026 WC: Agyemang-Badu unsure of Black Stars’ prospects https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-agyemang-badu-unsure-of-black-stars-prospects/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:57:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655352 Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has declined to predict how far the Black Stars will go at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing uncertainty over the team’s direction under new leadership.

Ghana are set to make their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, the former U-20 World Cup winner was candid about his reservations.

“For the World Cup, I have to be very frank; I don’t know where we will reach. Let’s see how he will build the team. The kind of players he will bring on board,” Agyemang-Badu said.

He stressed that much will depend on the team’s identity and defensive organisation under the newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz.

“The kind of identity we will have and the kind of defensive setup he will deploy. But from today, it will be very difficult for me to predict whether quarter-finals or semi-finals, whether we are going for the cup or evicted in the group stage.

“It will be very difficult for me,” he added.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with guiding the Black Stars beyond the group stage, following disappointing exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations grow for a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.

Pitso Mosimane confirms GFA approach before Carlos Queiroz’s appointment https://www.adomonline.com/pitso-mosimane-confirms-gfa-approach-before-carlos-queirozs-appointment/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:34:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655324 South African coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that Ghana made an informal approach to him regarding the Black Stars job ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though discussions never progressed beyond initial contact.

The highly regarded former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly manager was among the names linked to the vacant position following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

Speaking in an interview with Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports World, Mosimane confirmed that the Ghana Football Association had reached out, but stressed that the engagement lacked substance.

“There was a bit of talk. When I asked the office, they said there were talks, but sometimes teams want three names and then decide who they want out of the three,” Mosimane said.

The 61-year-old made it clear that a short-term assignment was never appealing, distancing himself from the possibility of taking charge under such conditions.

“For a call from a Ghana official is not really a serious thing, and also the other thing is, do I really want to go for two months, one game, three games, four games.

“Maybe I don’t want three games, four games right and for whatever reason.”

Mosimane suggested that such opportunities depend on individual perspective, pointing to the eventual appointment of Carlos Queiroz, who has taken charge of the team ahead of the tournament.

“And maybe Carlos [Queiroz] says, ‘ Why not, let me go have fun, let me go to the World Cup again, it depends on how you see it,” he added.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday and has already begun preparations for the World Cup, where Ghana will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

With Ghana seeking to improve on their group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz has been handed the responsibility of guiding the four-time African champions to a deeper run on football’s biggest stage.

EU backs Ghana’s poultry scheme with 150k birds for 3,000 farmers https://www.adomonline.com/eu-backs-ghanas-poultry-scheme-with-150k-birds-for-3000-farmers/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 19:55:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655211 The European Union (EU) has thrown its weight behind Ghana’s flagship Feed Ghana programme, donating 150,000 fully vaccinated birds to 3,000 poultry farmers across six districts in the Upper East, Savannah and North East regions.

The support was announced at the launch of the government’s ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ initiative in Kpalbe, in the North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The intervention, delivered through the EU-funded Food Security Response Northern Ghana Project, is being implemented by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

It aims to cut the country’s reliance on poultry imports, bolster food and nutrition security, and create jobs.

Each beneficiary will also receive feed and essential veterinary services.

Ghana currently spends between $300m and $400m annually on chicken imports. The government says the scheme is part of a wider push to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry within three years.

Speaking at the launch, Food and Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku urged farmers not to treat the birds as a short-term handout.

“The birds are layers. So, after a month, they will start laying eggs for you and the layers are also for you,” Mr Opoku said.

“You can sell the eggs, keep some in the house to improve your nutrition, and make some money from the sales. But we – the EU and Ghana – don’t expect you to go and consume the birds in the first month.”

He added: “This is an investment and we want you to make income from it and use it as an opportunity to enhance your livelihoods. It’s not meant for everybody but the vulnerable, and we want to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich in society.”

Mr Opoku said boosting local production would reduce import costs and make poultry more affordable for Ghanaians.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, said agriculture and food security remained central to the EU’s support for Ghana.

“Through this delivery, the EU works with the government and our partners at FAO to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry, boost farmers’ incomes sustainably and create jobs across the value chain with all inputs sourced locally,” Mr Skinnebach said.

FAO Representative to Ghana, Priya Gujadhur, said beneficiaries had already been equipped with practical skills.

“Beneficiaries of the project have been given hands-on poultry management and business skills to succeed,” she said.

“Empowering the farmers to produce their own eggs and chicken promotes both sustainability and practical training.”

The community leaders have welcomed the move. The Chief of Kakpande, Kakpandewura Kayiti, described the initiative as timely, citing poor harvests and rising food prices.

“Because the recent drought and current low food prices are making crop farming unattractive compared to animal farming, this initiative is timely,” he said.

“I encourage all farmers to take advantage of rearing a small number, especially the poultry, to supplement our livelihoods.”

The Food Security Response Northern Ghana Project was launched in September 2023 with €10m in EU funding.

It aims to support more than 50,000 farmers affected by the fallout from Russia’s war against Ukraine while building climate resilience in northern Ghana.

Ghana summons South African envoy over xenophobic incidents https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-summons-south-african-envoy-over-xenophobic-incidents/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 19:52:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655209 The government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of the South African High Commission in Ghana, Mr Thando Dthamba, over recent reports of xenophobic incidents involving foreign nationals in South Africa.

The Acting High Commissioner was invited by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to formally convey Ghana’s strong concern over alleged intimidation and harassment targeting foreigners, including Ghanaians, as captured in widely circulated social media videos.

In a press release issued on April 23, the Minister cited a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted, asked to produce proof of legal status, and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.” He described such actions as conduct that undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.

The statement further noted that although no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current incidents, similar occurrences in the past have led to loss of lives and property, underscoring the need for swift intervention to prevent escalation.

Mr Ablakwa also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support during South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle as a symbol of enduring solidarity.

“Unprovoked harassment of foreign nationals is contrary to the principles of African unity and peaceful coexistence,” he stressed.

The government has since lodged a formal protest, calling for urgent measures to ensure the protection of Ghanaian nationals, prevent further incidents, and guarantee that such situations do not recur.

In response, Mr Dthamba assured that the South African government is taking the matter seriously and has initiated steps to restore calm.

He added that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the situation to prevent violence and ensure accountability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians abroad, indicating that diplomatic engagements with South African authorities will continue.

Ghana, Sierra Leone condemn xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians, African migrants in South Africa https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-sierra-leone-condemn-xenophobic-attacks-on-ghanaians-african-migrants-in-south-africa/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 19:51:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655206 The Foreign Affairs Ministers of Ghana and Sierra Leone have jointly condemned recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians and other African migrants in South Africa.

The incidents, which have gone viral on social media and sparked widespread concern across the continent, were strongly denounced during a high-level ministerial meeting held in Accra on April 23.

The condemnation came as both countries inaugurated a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation aimed at strengthening bilateral ties in key sectors, including trade, agriculture, energy, tourism, and aviation. The two nations also signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and one additional agreement.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, told the joint committee that Ghanaian authorities have already engaged their South African counterparts, who have assured that the matter will receive urgent attention.

He expressed deep concern over the attacks, describing them as particularly painful given the longstanding relationship, cooperation, and mutual support between Ghana and South Africa.

Despite the disappointment, Mr Ablakwa urged Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid any form of retaliation, noting that South African authorities are taking steps to address the situation.

Also speaking at the meeting, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Frances Apiagie Alghali, condemned the attacks and called for stronger continental collaboration to address such incidents.

She stressed the need for African countries to work together to prevent xenophobia and protect the rights and dignity of migrants across the continent.

We must improve the legacy of Otto Addo – Black Stars Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/we-must-improve-the-legacy-of-otto-addo-black-stars-carlos-queiroz/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 18:18:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655200 New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Otto Addo, during his official unveiling in Accra, acknowledging the foundation laid before his arrival as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced 73-year-old tactician has signed a short-term four-month deal to lead Ghana into the global tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, taking over from Addo, who was dismissed in March following defeats to Austria and Germany.

Despite his exit, Addo leaves behind a significant legacy, becoming the first coach to guide Ghana to two World Cup qualifications—2022 and 2026.

Under his tenure, the Black Stars also went unbeaten in the 2026 qualifiers, topping Group I with 25 points.

Queiroz was quick to acknowledge that achievement, insisting his role is to build on—not erase—the progress already made.

“We must improve the legacy of the previous coach, Otto Addo. I thank him very much for qualifying Ghana for the World Cup; that is our goal.”

The Portuguese coach stressed a measured and analytical approach rather than sweeping changes, revealing that his technical team is already studying the squad in detail.

“We are studying and analysing everything related to the past of the team in order to improve.”

He also emphasised a frank assessment of player quality and team structure, insisting that selections for the World Cup will be based strictly on merit.

“We are making an honest assessment of where we stand—the value of the players, the value of the team.”

“There is a difference between a good decision and a bad decision in football… we must bring the right players to build the right team.”

Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking during his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the experienced Portuguese tactician underlined that no player is guaranteed a spot in the national team.

“Nobody owns the national team shirt. That must be clear,” the 73-year-old said.

He added that selection would be based strictly on merit, fitness, and experience.

“The players dream to represent the country, and it is our job to give them a fair and right opportunity. My job is to be sure that the ones who wear the shirt are those who deserve to be there.

“The players I select [would be] capable, fit [and] experienced,” he added.

Ghana will feature at the FIFA World Cup for a fifth time, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The experienced Portuguese tactician made the assurance during his official unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where he was introduced as Otto Addo’s replacement on a four-month deal leading into the tournament.

Queiroz said his technical setup will carefully assess all eligible players, both locally and abroad, as part of efforts to assemble a competitive squad for the global showpiece.

“We have one team behind the scenes that is working very hard to collect information about players, either local players or foreign players. There will be a fair opportunity for the local players,” Queiroz said.

He explained that the scouting structure will be split, with one group based in Accra monitoring domestic talent while another tracks players overseas, before final decisions are made on selection.

“One group will stay in Accra, and one group will work abroad, and at the end we will make a decision for the squad,” he added.

The 73-year-old also stressed that selection will be based strictly on merit, highlighting performance, fitness, experience and character as key criteria.

Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The decision comes in the wake of the official unveiling of new head coach Carlos Queiroz in Accra on Thursday, April 23.

The experienced Portuguese manager is expected to strengthen his backroom staff with five additional appointments, with further details set to be announced in the coming days.

While changes are anticipated, the GFA has opted for continuity by keeping assistant coach Desmond Offei, goalkeepers’ trainer Fatawu Dauda, and high-performance coach John Paintsi within the technical setup under Queiroz.

The 73-year-old coach is expected to remain in Ghana for a few days before travelling to Europe to begin assessing potential squad members ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in a difficult Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be aiming for a stronger showing, with Queiroz tasked with steering the four-time African champions to a more competitive run on football’s biggest stage.

I am a winning coach, says newly unveiled Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-a-winning-coach-says-newly-unveiled-black-stars-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 16:53:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655182 New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has made it clear that results—not aesthetics—will define his tenure, insisting his sole focus is on winning matches.

The 73-year-old, who has previously managed national teams including Egypt, Iran and Portugal, has been handed a short-term deal ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His appointment follows the dismissal of Otto Addo by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), despite the former coach securing qualification for the tournament.

The decision came after a string of underwhelming performances that raised concerns over the team’s direction.

Speaking during his official unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, April 23, Queiroz dismissed ongoing discussions about his tactical approach, describing himself simply as a coach who delivers victories.

“I am a winning coach. I don’t understand that thing of defend or attack,” the 73-year-old said.

“When we don’t have the ball, we have to fight together, sacrifice, and suffer to recover the ball as fast as possible in order to build up opportunities and score.

“At the end, in Ghana, and the rest of the world, there is only one reason in football, to win,” he added.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament and face a stern test in Group L, where they are drawn against England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 editions, expectations will be high for a more competitive showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with restoring belief and delivering results on football’s biggest stage.

It’s my biggest challenge – Carlos Queiroz on accepting Black Stars coaching job https://www.adomonline.com/its-my-biggest-challenge-carlos-queiroz-on-accepting-black-stars-coaching-job/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 16:40:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655174 Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has described his decision to lead Ghana as the most demanding task of his long managerial career.

The 73-year-old, who has previously managed Egypt and Portugal, was officially unveiled in Accra following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

His appointment comes with high expectations as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, April 23, Queiroz acknowledged the scale of the task ahead but expressed confidence in his ability to deliver.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be here today,” Queiroz said.

“Since I arrived, I have started to feel it. This is the soul of the Black Stars. The soul of the Black Stars is huge, and that means our dreams and expectations are huge.

“After eight national teams and important competitions, this is the biggest challenge of my life, and I am ready for that.

“I can promise and guarantee that I will bring 40 years of my experience [to the job],” the former Manchester United assistant coach.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Having exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be aiming for a stronger showing this time around, with Queiroz tasked with guiding the four-time African champions to a more competitive run on the global stage.

Diplomatic solutions don’t work on xenophobic attacks — Director of Communications, United Party https://www.adomonline.com/diplomatic-solutions-dont-work-on-xenophobic-attacks-director-of-communications-united-party/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 16:21:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655136 Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has rejected diplomatic approaches to addressing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, arguing that such efforts have been ineffective over the years.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he said he does not support diplomatic solutions, insisting they have failed to curb the recurring violence.

According to him, xenophobic attacks in South Africa date back to 1994 and have continued almost every year, making the situation appear cyclical.

He expressed concern that despite repeated discussions and diplomatic engagements, the attacks persist, putting the lives and livelihoods of other Africans at risk.

Solomon Owusu argued that relying solely on diplomacy has not yielded results, adding that stronger and more decisive measures may be needed to address the issue.

Some policemen request galamsey postings for personal gain – Afigya Kwabre MP https://www.adomonline.com/some-policemen-request-galamsey-postings-for-personal-gain-afigya-kwabre-mp/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 13:38:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655042 Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has raised concerns about the mindset surrounding illegal mining, warning that it is undermining efforts to combat galamsey.

Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV, he alleged that some police officers are eager to be posted to galamsey-prone areas, not to enforce the law, but because of the personal benefits they stand to gain.

“There are some policemen who want to be posted to galamsey areas,” he stated.

According to him, this reflects a deeper problem that goes beyond policy formulation and enforcement.

He stressed that even if government moves to regulate small-scale mining activities, the fight will remain difficult unless there is a fundamental change in mindset.

Collins Adomako-Mensah noted that the galamsey business has become highly attractive, drawing individuals who prioritise personal gain over national interest.

He warned that such attitudes weaken the fight against illegal mining and make enforcement efforts less effective.

He therefore called for a collective change in attitude, emphasizing that without integrity and commitment, policies alone will not be enough to address the galamsey menace.

If Ghana was better, many would return — Ghanaian community leader in South Africa https://www.adomonline.com/if-ghana-was-better-many-would-return-ghanaian-community-leader-in-south-africa/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 12:45:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655016 Deputy Chairperson of the Ghanaian community in South Africa, Tina Buxton, has described the situation facing Ghanaians in the country as disturbing, revealing that many would return home if given the opportunity.

Speaking via Zoom on Badwam on Adom TV, she said the current conditions are not easy for many Ghanaians living there.

According to her, a significant number of Ghanaians in South Africa have expressed the desire to return home due to the challenges they face.

However, she explained that economic difficulties in Ghana make it hard for many to make that decision.

Tina Buxton noted that if conditions were better in Ghana, many of them would have already returned rather than continuing to endure hardships abroad.

“Majority of Ghanaians would love to come back home, but they are coping because things are not easy in Ghana too,” she said.

She added that most are simply coping with the situation as they weigh their limited options between staying in South Africa and returning home.

The experienced Portuguese tactician replaces Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties last month following a run of disappointing results in friendly matches against Austria and Germany during the team’s preparations for the global tournament.

Queiroz brings a wealth of international coaching experience, having previously led national teams including Portugal, Colombia and Egypt. His appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move aimed at stabilising the Black Stars and improving their performance on the world stage.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the official unveiling will take place at 1:00 pm at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where Queiroz is expected to address the media for the first time since taking charge.

He is set to outline his tactical philosophy, discuss his plans for the squad, and respond to questions from journalists as Ghana intensifies preparations for the tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The event will also mark his formal introduction to supporters and stakeholders, as the technical team begins building momentum towards the competition.

Queiroz is expected to take immediate charge of Ghana’s final preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales on June 2 before the World Cup kicks off.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27 in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.

Known for his strong tournament record, Queiroz has previously guided teams to notable World Cup achievements, including Portugal’s run to the Round of 16 in 2010 and Iran’s qualification campaigns in 2014 and 2018, as well as South Africa’s qualification for the 2002 edition.

His arrival is expected to usher in a new phase for the Black Stars, who are seeking to avoid early exits following their performances at the 2014 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.

I am confident about Black Stars’ chances of winning AFCON 2027 – GFA’s Marketing Director https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-confident-about-black-stars-chances-of-winning-afcon-2027-gfas-marketing-director/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 10:09:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654944 The Director of Marketing at the Ghana Football Association, Jamil Maraby, has expressed strong belief that the Ghana national football team will finally reclaim continental glory at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

Ghana national football team, four-time African champions, have endured a prolonged title drought since their last triumph in 1982, falling short in finals appearances in 1992, 2010, and 2015.

In remarks published on the GFA’s official website, Maraby backed the current generation to rewrite that narrative, citing their growing experience and cohesion.

“I am very confident and feel Ghana will win the next AFCON,” he declared.

Maraby highlighted the stability within the squad as a major factor behind his optimism, noting that a large portion of the team has remained together over several years, gaining exposure at both continental and global levels.

“About 60 to 70 per cent of the squad remains intact. Many have played in two World Cups, and some have featured in three AFCON tournaments. By 2027, they will be at their peak—around 27 to 28 years. It’s a natural cycle.”

He also placed Ghana’s ambitions within the shifting dynamics of African football, suggesting that the dominance of recent champions could soon give way to a new era.

“Ivory Coast had their chance and took it. Senegal are at the top now, but cycles change, and Ghana will rise again.”

Before their 2027 AFCON campaign, the Black Stars are set to compete at the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 2027 AFCON tournament will be co-hosted by Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

The experienced Portuguese tactician touched down at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday evening and is set to be formally introduced at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Queiroz takes over on a short-term, four-month contract following the dismissal of Otto Addo, whose tenure ended after a string of inconsistent results.

The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran manager has been tasked with leading Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States later this year.

Renowned for his extensive World Cup experience, Queiroz guided Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010 and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. He also played a role in South Africa’s qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup.

As part of official protocol, the Ghana Football Association will present him to Sports Minister Kofi Adams following his unveiling.

Why I haven’t started coaching — Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-havent-started-coaching-asamoah-gyan/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 16:02:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654672 Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has opened up on why he has yet to transition into coaching, despite holding the required qualifications to step into the dugout.

Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s finest footballers and a standout figure on the African and European stages, the former striker says the demands of coaching have so far kept him away from the profession.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the ex-Sunderland A.F.C. and Al Ain FC forward stressed that coaching requires a level of commitment he is not currently prepared to give.

“The reason why I haven’t started my coaching thing is all about dedication. When you dedicate yourself to coaching, you will have time for the kids,” Gyan said.

Although he possesses a UEFA Licence B, Gyan revealed that his attention is firmly fixed on his business ventures for now, putting any immediate coaching ambitions on hold.

“I have a UEFA License B, but I’m not into coaching because I have other businesses to attend to. Coaching is about dedication, and you have to focus and teach.”

Gyan enjoyed an illustrious playing career, representing Ghana at three FIFA World Cups — the 2006 FIFA World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and 2014 FIFA World Cup — cementing his status as one of the country’s most iconic football figures.

Why reduce OSP powers if it helps fight corruption? — CENS Africa boss questions move https://www.adomonline.com/why-reduce-osp-powers-if-it-helps-fight-corruption-cens-africa-boss-questions-move/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 15:57:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654643 Executive Director of CENS Africa, Dr Paa Kwesi Eduaful Abaidoo, has questioned moves to limit the powers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), arguing that such actions could weaken Ghana’s fight against corruption.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, he acknowledged that the Attorney-General’s Department may be acting within constitutional bounds but insisted that the broader national interest must be considered.

According to him, the key issue should not only be what the Constitution permits, but whether the OSP, in its current form, is effective in addressing corruption.

He argued that if the institution is delivering on its mandate and contributing meaningfully to the anti-corruption agenda, then efforts should be made to strengthen, not weaken it.

“If the Office of the Special Prosecutor is helping us fight corruption, why reduce its powers? We should rather strengthen it to function well,” he said.

Dr Abaidoo stressed that the Constitution should serve the needs of the people and not be used to undermine institutions that are beneficial to national development.

He therefore called for a review of the powers of the OSP to ensure it is adequately equipped to function effectively.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Mr Ablakwa said he initiated a telephone conversation with the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation to address the disturbing incidents and coordinate an official response.

“I called him on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” he stated.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the South African government has expressed concern and assured Ghana of swift action.

“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full-scale investigations into the depressing incidents,” he said.

He further disclosed that authorities in South Africa are expected to brief African ambassadors as part of efforts to address the situation and reassure affected countries.

Mr Ablakwa also confirmed that he has been in constant communication with Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate Ghana’s response.

“I am also able to confirm that since yesterday, I have been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa… coordinating our response,” he noted.

He revealed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission has already located one of the victims captured in the viral footage and is providing consular support.

“I am gladdened that so far, colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well,” he added.

The Minister assured that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded in connection with the incident and urged the public to remain calm.

“No Ghanaian life has been lost. We urge calm and confidence in our collective capacity to protect Ghanaians,” he said.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, Mr Ablakwa stressed that the administration remains resolute in protecting the welfare and safety of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

He also called for unity across the continent, cautioning against actions that could undermine Pan-African solidarity.

“May these regrettable incidents never quench our Pan-African love and solidarity… we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he added.

GAA clarifies Isaac Botsio’s withdrawal from World Relays https://www.adomonline.com/gaa-clarifies-isaac-botsios-withdrawal-from-world-relays/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 12:14:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654483 Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) president Bawah Fuseini has dismissed claims that Isaac Botsio withdrew from the upcoming World Athletics Relays due to missing out on the Tokyo World Championships, insisting he was left out earlier based on his time and ranking, not baton-related issues in the Bahamas.

His remarks come following claims that Botsio withdrew due to missing out on the Tokyo World Championships.

GAA named a five-man squad, including experienced sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, to represent the country at the upcoming World Relays set to take place next month in Gaborone.

Joseph Paul Amoah and Ibrahim Fusieni are the other names listed, but Isaac Botsio has withdrawn from the squad, leaving Ghana with no reserves heading to the upcoming meet.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Bawah Fuseini dismissed claims of any issues between the athletes and the federation, insisting that Isaac Botsio had confirmed his availability through the team captain before the squad was submitted.

“There is no problem between the federation and Isaac Botsio or any other athlete as far as I am concerned.

“I have spoken with Joe Paul, our captain, and he [Isaac Botsio] indicated to Paul that he is available. I told Paul that I would be very grateful if Botsio is available to attend the World Relays and African Championship, and he spoke to Botsio, and he came back that Botsio is available, and we entered him. So that’s why we entered him into the final list; there’s no issue,” he stated.

He further explained that Isaac Botsio’s omission from the Tokyo World Championships was based on his performances and times at the time, outlining the criteria used in the selection process.

“I am not sure he was hurt because our selection is solely based on current performance and times. It is not selective. We always pick the four or five fastest times. Going to Tokyo, he was the sixth fastest,” he added.

The 2026 World Athletics Relays is scheduled to take place on May 2–3, 2026, in Gaborone, Botswana.

Ghana, Sierra Leone hold joint ministerial talks in Accra to strengthen economic cooperation https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-sierra-leone-hold-joint-ministerial-talks-in-accra-to-strengthen-economic-cooperation/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 11:42:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654439 Ghana and Sierra Leone have taken a significant step toward deepening bilateral ties, as a joint technical and ministerial committee meets in Accra to deliberate on enhanced economic cooperation between the two countries.

The engagement follows renewed efforts by both nations to establish a framework for long-term collaboration, including a proposed parliamentary cooperation arrangement aimed at delivering mutual economic benefits.

A delegation from the Government of Sierra Leone is currently in Ghana for the discussions, which bring together officials from both countries to explore opportunities across key sectors.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khadija Iddrisu, welcomed the Sierra Leonean delegation and urged the joint committee to produce practical and impactful outcomes.

She emphasised the importance of the engagement, encouraging members to ensure their deliberations result in strong, actionable recommendations that will benefit both countries.

The formation of the joint committee stems from recent high-level engagements between President John Dramani Mahama and his Sierra Leonean counterpart, during which both leaders signalled their commitment to establishing permanent cooperation.

As part of the proposed collaboration, Ghana is expected to offer expertise in the cocoa sector, while Sierra Leone will contribute its strengths in other areas of the economy.

The Sierra Leonean delegation, led by Alance Logan from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, expressed optimism about the partnership.

He commended Ghana for its economic progress and noted that the collaboration would create opportunities for shared growth.

“We are happy to partner with Ghana. With Ghana’s rich experience in the cocoa sector and other areas, we believe this cooperation will be mutually beneficial,” he said.

The ongoing discussions are expected to lay the groundwork for a stronger economic partnership between the two West African nations.

Ghana faces setback ahead of World Relays https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-faces-setback-ahead-of-world-relays/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 11:21:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654412 Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini has expressed concern about heading to the World Athletics Relays without a reserve, following the withdrawal of Isaac Botsio.

Ghana Athletics named a five-man squad to represent the country at the upcoming World Relays set to take place next month in Gaborone.

The team included experienced sprinters Benjamin Azamati, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, Joseph Paul Amoah, Isaac Botsio and Ibrahim Fusieni.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Bawah Fuseini noted his concerns after Botsio’s withdrawal, stressing the implications it could have on the team’s participation in the competition.

“We are in a precarious position, and we can’t do anything. We’re heading to the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone 26 without a reserve, and that’s very dangerous. If something were to happen to one of the other four, and we cannot take part in the 4×100, then we have to pay some penalty to World Athletics. That’s where we are now, we are working with World Athletics to see if they can do something about it,” he said.

Bawah Fuseini, however, confirmed that Isaac Botsio withdrew from the squad due to school commitments.

“He initially confirmed availability, but after his name was submitted, he became unavailable due to school commitments.”

Hudson-Odoi to miss the rest of the season after quadriceps injury https://www.adomonline.com/hudson-odoi-to-miss-the-rest-of-the-season-after-quadriceps-injury/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 10:45:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654350 Callum Hudson-Odoi will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a right quadriceps injury, dealing a major setback to Nottingham Forest’s campaign.

The former Chelsea FC winger picked up the injury during Forest’s Europa League quarter-final clash against FC Porto last Thursday.

His absence is expected to be a significant blow for Forest as they push on in Europe, with the 25-year-old having become a key attacking figure for the side this season.

Hudson-Odoi, who remains eligible to represent the Ghana national football team, had recently been linked with a potential call-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the injury now places any immediate international involvement in doubt as he shifts focus to recovery.

In a statement released via the club’s social media channels, Nottingham Forest confirmed the winger has undergone surgery and has begun rehabilitation.

“Following further specialist consultation, the winger has undergone surgery today and will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately.”

“Callum is expected to return to full training during the pre-season period and everyone at the Club wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Hudson-Odoi later took to social media to reassure supporters, confirming the procedure was successful while expressing disappointment at his premature end to the season.

“Surgery was successful, but definitely not the way I wanted to end the season. But with God’s timing and plan, hopefully I’ll be back stronger and better than before. Thank you for your continued support and messages. I appreciate all the love, and let’s get the recovery started so I can get back out there doing what I love. No pain, no gain.”

Jordan Ayew, Fatawu Issahaku to play in League One as Leicester City are relegated https://www.adomonline.com/jordan-ayew-fatawu-issahaku-to-play-in-league-one-as-leicester-city-are-relegated/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 10:39:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654346 Ghanaian duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku are set to feature in England’s League One next season after Leicester City were relegated from the Championship.

The Foxes’ fate was sealed on Tuesday night following a dramatic draw against Hull City at the King Power Stadium.

Needing a victory to keep their survival hopes alive, Leicester endured a shaky start and fell behind in the first half after goalkeeper Asmir Begović made an error that gifted Hull the opening goal.

The hosts responded after the break, with Issahaku winning a penalty after being brought down in the box. Jordan Ayew calmly converted from the spot to level the score and reignite belief among the home supporters.

Momentum appeared to swing in Leicester’s favour when Luke Thomas fired them into the lead from close range. However, Hull refused to back down, and Oli McBurnie struck an equaliser that ultimately confirmed Leicester’s drop to the third tier.

Despite a late surge, including Patson Daka rattling the crossbar, Leicester could not find the decisive goal.

The result caps a disappointing campaign for the club, with relegation marking a significant setback for both the team and its players.

IMF projects Ghana’s debt-to-GDP to rise to 53% by 2026 despite recent gains https://www.adomonline.com/imf-projects-ghanas-debt-to-gdp-to-rise-to-53-by-2026-despite-recent-gains/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 07:04:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654258 Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to rise to 53.0% by the end of 2026, up from 45.3% recorded in 2025, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The projection is contained in the IMF’s Fiscal Monitor Report released on the sidelines of the 2026 Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington DC.

It is, however, not immediately clear what specific factors will drive the expected increase, as the report did not provide detailed breakdowns. It only noted that “Government debt and interest rate projections are based on a post-debt restructuring scenario.”

In 2024, Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 61.8%, with total debt pegged at GH¢726.7 billion, according to data from the Bank of Ghana. By 2025, the ratio had eased to 45.3%, with total debt declining to GH¢641 billion.

Despite the recent improvement, analysts caution that the outlook could shift depending on borrowing trends, exchange rate movements, and overall economic growth performance.

Some market watchers argue that increased borrowing or further depreciation of the cedi could alter the debt trajectory, while slower economic growth could also weigh on the debt-to-GDP ratio.

In April 2026, the government raised about GH¢2.7 billion through a 7-year bond issuance, marking a return to long-dated domestic borrowing after the Debt Exchange Programme. The bond carries a coupon rate of 12.5% and matures on March 29, 2033.

The IMF report also projects that Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio will ease to 50.7% in 2027.

Ghana Statistical Service data shows the size of the economy is now estimated at GH¢1.4 trillion, up from GH¢1.1 trillion in 2024.

Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, in the 2026 Budget Statement, outlined measures aimed at maintaining debt sustainability. These include expanding borrowing space for concessional loans, rebuilding the Sinking Fund, executing debt reprofiling and buyback programmes, and improving transparency in debt reporting.

He said the strategy is aimed at “managing debt, not being managed by it,” adding that Ghana’s goal is to return to a moderate risk of debt distress by 2028.

Ghana remains classified as a debt-distressed country by the IMF, although recent improvements have been acknowledged. The Fund expects Ghana to reach a moderate risk status by 2028 if current reforms are sustained.

Globally, the IMF warns that public debt pressures are rising, with worldwide debt projected to reach 100% of GDP by 2029, driven by higher spending needs and rising interest costs.

The Fund has called for “credible, well-sequenced fiscal adjustment” across countries to address growing vulnerabilities in the global financial system.

The upward movement reflects a string of encouraging performances in recent outings, underlining the team’s steady progress and growing confidence on the international stage.

It also signals renewed momentum within the squad as efforts to rebuild and strengthen the team begin to yield results.

On the continental front, the Black Queens continue to underline their pedigree, holding firm as one of Africa’s top sides, ranked third in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standings.

The position keeps Ghana among the elite in women’s football across the continent.

The latest improvement is expected to serve as a timely boost for the team ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a tournament that also doubles as a qualification pathway for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Carlos Queiroz to stay in hotel as GFA converts official Black Stars coach’s residence into office https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-to-stay-in-hotel-as-gfa-converts-official-black-stars-coachs-residence-into-office/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 13:05:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654065 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz will be accommodated in a hotel upon his arrival in the country, after the official residence previously designated for the national team coach was repurposed.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, GFA’s Senior Manager, Communications, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, explained that the five-bedroom property in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, originally handed over by the Sports Ministry in 2018 for use by the Black Stars coach, has now been converted into office space.

“The official house allocated for the Black Stars coach has been converted into office space,” he said.

“The decision will be taken in relation to that, but for his first time coming to Ghana, he will be accommodated in a hotel.”

The residence was initially provided to reduce government spending on accommodation for the national team’s head coach.

However, Sienu defended the decision to repurpose the facility, describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s football administration.

“We have had coaches who have Ghanaian lineages, who were already having accommodation in Ghana, so the building wasn’t in much use, but we needed to make proper use of the apartment,” he said.

“So we converted the spaces not in use for the Technical Hub. In a positive sphere, it was done because we wanted to help develop Ghana’s football and make it better.”

Carlos Queiroz, who has signed a four-month deal to replace Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to be officially unveiled as Black Stars head coach on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

2026 WC: John Paintsil relieved from Black Stars role as GFA reshapes technical team https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-john-paintsil-relieved-from-black-stars-role-as-gfa-reshapes-technical-team/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 12:41:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654017 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reportedly dismissed Black Stars high-performance coach John Paintsil as part of a wide-ranging restructuring of the national team’s technical setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Paintsil, who joined the senior national team’s backroom staff following the reappointment of Otto Addo in March 2024, has now become one of several figures affected by the ongoing shake-up triggered by Ghana’s inconsistent form in the build-up to the tournament.

The reshuffle has seen multiple changes to the Black Stars’ technical bench in recent months. Desmond Ofei was earlier brought in to replace Paintsil during the World Cup qualifying campaign, while Alain Ravera and Kim Lars Björkegren were later added as assistant coaches ahead of the finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Paintsil was subsequently reassigned as the team’s high-performance coach.

However, tensions within the setup intensified after back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany in March, results that led to the departure of head coach Otto Addo, along with technical advisor and GFA Director of Football Winfried Schäfer.

The latest decision involving Paintsil is understood to form part of a broader effort by the Ghana Football Association to reset and stabilise the technical structure before the global showpiece.

In a parallel development, veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has been appointed on a short-term deal as Ghana’s new head coach, with Roger De Sa expected to join him as assistant.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt, Iran and Portugal, has signed a four-month contract that will be reviewed after the World Cup. He is expected to be unveiled in Accra alongside members of his technical team on Thursday.

Ghana will continue their preparations with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales ahead of the tournament.

The Black Stars, set for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Having exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022, Queiroz’s immediate task will be to restore stability and guide Ghana towards a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.

2026 WC: We will do our best to raise the flag of Ghana high – Roger De Sa https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-will-do-our-best-to-raise-the-flag-of-ghana-high-roger-de-sa/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 11:41:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654000 Incoming Black Stars assistant coach Roger De Sa has pledged that Ghana’s technical team will give their utmost to ensure the country is well represented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South African tactician is set to join head coach Carlos Queiroz on the technical bench following Otto Addo’s departure in March after consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany.

De Sa and Queiroz, who previously worked together with the national teams of Iran and Egypt, reunite as they take charge of Ghana’s preparations for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking to South African outlet KickOff, De Sa stressed that the focus is on representing Ghana with pride rather than setting rigid targets.

“It’s all it is—we will do the best we can. There is no mandate to win this and that,” he said.

“The job is to go to the World Cup and fly the Ghanaian flag as high as possible,” De Sa added.

The new technical team is expected to be officially unveiled in Accra on Thursday, April 23, after which Queiroz and his backroom staff will immediately begin preparations with the squad.

Ghana are set to play Mexico in a warm-up fixture before wrapping up their pre-tournament friendlies against Wales on June 2.

At the World Cup, the Black Stars—making their fifth appearance—have been drawn in Group L. They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

The appointment comes with growing expectations for Ghana to improve on previous performances, having exited early in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, as hopes build for a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.

Roger De Sa set to be named as Black Stars assistant coach ahead of 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/roger-de-sa-set-to-be-named-as-black-stars-assistant-coach-ahead-of-2026-world-cup/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 11:33:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2653976 South African tactician Roger De Sa is expected to be officially confirmed as assistant coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

De Sa will join newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz, reuniting with the Portuguese manager as the duo prepare to guide Ghana into the tournament this summer. The pair have previously worked together with the Egyptian and Iranian national teams.

Confirming his imminent move, De Sa told South African outlet KickOff that he will travel to Accra on Thursday to begin work immediately.

“I will fly out on Thursday to Accra to start working straight away,” De Sa told KickOff.

He noted that Queiroz’s appointment by the Ghana Football Association progressed rapidly following the departure of the previous head coach.

“I think when the previous coach left, the Ghana FA looked at Carlos Queiroz, and obviously it happened very quickly. Within four to five days, it was done.”

The former Bidvest Wits coach admitted the tight schedule and logistics pose a major challenge, especially with most of the national team players based in Europe.

“Those are the challenges, but it comes with a job like this,” he said.

De Sa added that he has already begun extensive video analysis to prepare for the task ahead, particularly given the limited preparation time with the squad.

“I’ve been watching a lot of films and videos, watching different players with different clubs. The biggest challenge is obviously selecting a team without having enough time. Preparations are also very short—you’ve got about two weeks to prepare your team.

“But yeah, that’s how it is, that’s the name of the game,” he added, acknowledging the difficulties that await him in his new role.

Despite the challenges, the 61-year-old insisted he is ready for the demands of the job.

“It’s not easy, it’s going to be difficult, but they’re all difficult anyway,” he added.

Meanwhile, Queiroz is expected to be unveiled in Accra on Thursday.

Ghana will compete in Group L at the 2026 World Cup, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz, who brings extensive World Cup experience, previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010, and took Iran to consecutive appearances in 2014 and 2018.

Sammy Kuffour calls for urgent action on dual-nationality players https://www.adomonline.com/sammy-kuffour-calls-for-urgent-action-on-dual-nationality-players/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 11:24:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2653956 Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has called for a more aggressive and organised approach to securing the commitment of Ghanaian-heritage players born or raised abroad, as debate intensifies over dual-nationality footballers.

Speaking amid growing scrutiny of Ghana’s player recruitment strategy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kuffour said Ghana is increasingly losing out to European nations when it comes to convincing top prospects to switch allegiance.

In an interview with 3Sports, the former Bayern Munich defender argued that Ghana often finds itself playing catch-up in a highly competitive global talent market, where elite players with Ghanaian roots are frequently courted by multiple national teams.

He pointed to the dilemma surrounding players such as Jude Bellingham, suggesting that countries like England would almost always have the upper hand in securing their services.

“If your son is Jude Bellingham, both parents from Ghana, will you allow Jude Bellingham to play for Ghana or England? Whether we like it or not, we are the second choice,” Kuffour said.

He also highlighted examples such as Jeremy Doku and Jeremie Frimpong, both of whom are eligible to represent Ghana but play for European nations, as evidence of missed opportunities.

According to him, the solution lies in earlier engagement and stronger long-term scouting structures.

“If Doku, Jeremie Frimpong and all those players… if we had got them young, all of them would play for Ghana. Let’s get them young. That’s why I’m using the office in Europe,” he explained.

His remarks add to a long-running conversation within Ghanaian football about identity, opportunity and the growing challenge of competing with established European systems for dual-national players.

The Ghana forward joined from AFC Bournemouth and has been instrumental in Pep Guardiola’s attacking setup.

Semenyo was heavily involved in Sunday’s fixture as Manchester City secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal, cutting the gap at the top of the table to three points.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Vieira credited the young forward, highlighting his abilities and consistency for the Cityzens.

“He has been one of the best players in the Premier League since January,” the French legend said.

“He came into the team with a strong character and personality. He has been scoring goals, and he has been playing in all the games,” he added.

The 26-year-old has already scored eight goals and recorded three assists across all competitions for the Manchester side, and earned the first major trophy of his professional career, playing a key role in City’s 2-0 triumph over Arsenal in the EFL Cup final.

His versatility in operating across multiple positions, combined with his directness and high work rate, has added a new dimension to Manchester City’s attacking options.

U-17 WWCQ: Black Maidens coach Joe Nana Adarkwa confident in age compliance https://www.adomonline.com/u-17-wwcq-black-maidens-coach-joe-nana-adarkwa-confident-in-age-compliance/ Mon, 20 Apr 2026 13:56:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2653642 Ghana Black Maidens head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa has assured that the team remains fully committed to strict age verification procedures, following past sanctions that exposed eligibility lapses in Ghanaian youth football.

Ghana were previously punished by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which imposed a two-edition ban from the U-17 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers after an age-fraud case in 2022. The sanction prompted a review and tightening of screening systems within the national setup.

Speaking after the Black Maidens’ emphatic 6-0 victory over Togo at the Accra Sports Stadium over the weekend, Adarkwa said the team has since strengthened its checks and systems to avoid a repeat of past mistakes.

“In terms of ages, we are very careful with everything we do. Any player we pick goes through the FA system to confirm eligibility for U-17. There’s no shaking,” he stated.

He also praised the squad’s mentality and hunger, noting that their recent performance is a reflection of their growing confidence.

“The girls are focused and hungry for success. What you saw today is just a glimpse of what we are capable of,” he added.

The dominant win completed an 8-0 aggregate triumph over Togo, booking Ghana’s place in the next round of the qualifiers, where they will face Liberia’s U-17 women’s team.
