Residents of Abotareye, a farming community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, are appealing to authorities, philanthropists and development partners to support the community with potable water and improved classroom infrastructure.

According to community members, the absence of a reliable water source continues to place an excessive burden on households, particularly women and girls, who must wake up very early and spend long hours queuing to fetch water for daily domestic use.
They said the situation affects productivity and contributes to pupils arriving late to school, as families struggle to secure water before starting the day’s activities.
The concerns were raised during a community engagement with the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly, led by Municipal Chief Executive Joseph Awal Antwi, where residents also highlighted challenges with inadequate classroom facilities at the Abotareye M/A Basic School.
They noted that the poor state of infrastructure disrupts effective teaching and learning, with academic work frequently interrupted when rain threatens, forcing classes to close earlier than planned.

The community therefore called on the Municipal Assembly and other benevolent individuals and organisations to assist in addressing the pressing needs, stressing that access to clean water and a conducive learning environment are essential to improving health, education outcomes and overall development.
Responding to the appeal, the MCE for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Antwi, urged residents to discontinue home burial practices, explaining that such burial sites have posed challenges in securing suitable land for boreholes and other water systems.
He indicated that previous efforts to provide potable water to the community had been affected by these constraints.
Mr Antwi further assured residents that the Assembly is preparing to roll out classroom projects in selected communities to enhance academic performance across the municipality.
He added that Abotareye M/A Basic School is expected to benefit from one of the upcoming interventions, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure and community welfare.
