The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has accused the government of intimidation and abuse of power following the alleged arrest of Agona West Constituency Organiser, David Essandoh, popularly known as Sam Toys.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kodua claimed that Mr. Essandoh was picked up on Monday, but the party has since been unable to establish his whereabouts.
“Officially, we don’t know why he has been picked up. We also don’t know where he is. We have gone to the CID, Cyber Security Department and National Security, and they all said they are not aware of his whereabouts,” he alleged.
According to him, the actions of security operatives under the current administration are creating fear and undermining the rule of law.
“Under this President, they are acting as if we are under military or dictatorship rule. The rule of law should work,” he stated.
Mr. Kodua further alleged that individuals who criticise the government are being targeted.
“This is not the first example. Anyone who speaks against the government will be picked up. Security operatives have put the law in their own hands,” he claimed.
He warned that such actions could encourage abuse and lawlessness if people are allegedly arrested without information on their whereabouts.
“Because you want to keep the opposition silent, they are doing this. We cannot sit down and watch this impunity go on. NDC, enough is enough,” he said.
The NPP General Secretary also insisted that arrested persons must be granted access to legal representation.
“At least if you pick someone up, let him have access to his lawyers. If the NDC thinks they are doing this to intimidate us, it won’t work. We will continue to speak against the government,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NPP in the Central Region and the Agona West Constituency have given the Ghana Police Service and the government a 24-hour ultimatum to produce Mr. Essandoh following his alleged arrest at Agona Swedru.
