President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians currently residing in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.

The evacuation exercise is expected to be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria.

According to government sources, the affected Ghanaians had earlier responded to an advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry, urging citizens in South Africa to register with the High Commission if they required assistance or evacuation due to escalating tensions and attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The 300 individuals approved for evacuation are said to be among those who officially registered with the mission following reports of renewed violence and insecurity in some communities.

The government says the intervention forms part of measures aimed at protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad and ensuring their safe return home.

The Mahama administration has assured the public that the welfare, safety and protection of Ghanaians both within and outside the country remain a top priority.

Authorities are expected to provide further details on the evacuation arrangements and timelines in the coming days.
