According to him, their drivers heeded to advice in abiding by road traffic regulations which helped in recording accident-free Christmas.

Speaking to Adom News, he said aside from the accident-free, they also ensured fared were not increased irrespective of passengers crowding the station.

He said most of the lorry terminals were charging overboard due to the high human traffic.

“We recorded high sales during Christmas, but now it has returned to its normal routine, which we are expecting the same from next week when school reopens,” he said.

Kwadwo Agyei wants the government to prioritize fixing potholes on the roads, which he says contribute significantly to accidents.

The commercial drivers also expect reduction in prices of spare parts.

“Now some of the items are normal; the government should stabilize it,” he said.

Some passengers said the transportation challenges are gradually easing.

The blaze, which started around 3:50 p.m., swept through about six container shops, including two hair salons, two restaurants, a seamstress shop, and a footwear shop.

Municipal Fire Commander DO2 Enock Tetteh told the media that his team responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. Firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the flames before they spread to nearby properties.

“The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation,” he said, urging residents and business owners to handle electrical and gas appliances with care to prevent similar incidents.

Some affected shop owners alleged that the fire may have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion in one of the restaurants before spreading rapidly to adjoining shops.

No casualties were reported, but property worth thousands of cedis was destroyed. The Ghana National Fire Service has since launched an investigation into the incident.

Flood displaces residents, shop owners in Bibiani https://www.adomonline.com/flood-displaces-residents-shop-owners-in-bibiani/ Tue, 20 May 2025 11:08:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536445 Several residents, traders, and shop owners in New Compound, Dansoman, and New Town—suburbs of Bibiani in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region—have been displaced following a torrential downpour that led to severe flooding in the area.

The floodwaters submerged shops, homes, and pathways, forcing occupants to evacuate in haste.

Affected residents say this is not the first time the area has experienced flooding of this magnitude, with some describing the situation as a recurring nightmare during heavy rains.

Many traders at the New Compound and Dansoman markets reported significant damage to goods and property. Soaked furniture, electronics, clothing, and perishable items were seen floating or destroyed in shops and kiosks.

Residents expressed deep frustration over the lack of drainage maintenance, pointing to choked gutters and poor waste disposal systems as major contributors to the recurring floods.

In response, Assembly Member for New and Old Compound, Mr. Seth Assan, has appealed to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly to urgently desilt the drainage systems and provide long-term flood control solutions.

According to him, the uncontrolled flow of water—due to blocked gutters and poor drainage infrastructure—puts lives and property in constant danger. Mr. Assan warned that without swift intervention, the area may face even greater destruction with the onset of the major rainy season.

He further called for the construction of a proper drainage network to prevent future occurrences.

Meanwhile, NADMO officials are expected to visit the affected areas to assess the situation and provide support where necessary. Residents are also being advised to exercise caution and avoid flood-prone paths during and after heavy rains.

The suspect, Kwasi Asamoah, a teaching intern at Juaboso D/A Primary School, is accused of stealing the animals from Oforikrom, a suburb of Bibiani.

Some livestock farmers told Adom News that sheep had been disappearing from the community, but efforts to catch the thief had been unsuccessful.

Their efforts paid off when they visited the abattoir and spotted four of their missing sheep. Upon inquiry, the butchers revealed that Asamoah had sold the animals to them and promised to bring more.

The next morning, Asamoah returned with four additional sheep, making a total of eight. When confronted, the herdsmen identified all the animals as theirs.

The suspect was subjected to severe beatings before being handed over to the Bibiani police, despite his claims that three of the sheep belonged to him and that he was taking them to Kumasi for sale.

One of the butchers, Iddrisu Abdulai, disclosed that Asamoah had sold the animals for GH¢3,000.

Gov’t unveils ultra modern Minerals Commission office at Bibiani https://www.adomonline.com/govt-unveils-ultra-modern-minerals-commission-office-at-bibiani/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 15:35:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450629 As part of ongoing efforts to decentralize the Minerals Commission, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has commissioned an ultra modern office equipped with the latest technology at Bibiani to oversee the Bibiani/Anhwiaso/Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The newly-constructed office which is a further validation of the government’s commitment to decentralization of the Minerals Commission will see the commission provide effective oversight in the Western North Region and beyond.

Addressing a gathering of traditional authorities, management and staff of the Minerals Commission and residents of the district, the Minister underscored the importance of a magnificent building to the efficient regulation of mining activities in the Western North Region.

He outlined specific features of the new office that make an ideal hub for mining-related activities in the area and charged the staff of the commission in the area to live up to the set expectations of the commission.

“Despite the importance of this Office to the mining industry, it has been accommodated in a very small rented chamber and hall office space for more than thirty (30) years. This impeded the recruitment of new staff to augment the work of the office. The inadequacy of the Office became even more apparent following the internal restructuring of the Minerals Commission, which necessitated increasing services at the Regional and District Offices, such as cartography, survey, community relations, environmental protection, among others.

“Nananom, Ladies and Gentlemen, with three (3) large-scale mining operations within this Municipality at Awaso, Bibiani and Chirano, it became necessary to secure a more conducive working space for the Commission to effectively regulate mining operations in this area, and to provide the full spectrum of mining-related monitoring services, not just for small scale mining, but, also, large scale mining operations, and ensure the successful implementation of the minerals diversification policy through the promotion of economic and industrial minerals. With two Satellite Offices in Nkwawie and Juaboso, I do not doubt that this Office will live up to its mandate” he said.

Mr Jinapor used the opportunity to reiterate the government’s zero tolerance for illegal small-scale mining, noting that the government has made commitments to rid the mining space of any illegality, particularly mining activities that happen close to forest reserves and river bodies.

“I want to use this opportunity to reaffirm the Government’s unflinching commitment to the fight against this canker, which, undoubtedly, threatens our very existence. This commitment, we have demonstrated through several initiatives such as the declaration of water bodies as Red Zones for mining, the suspension of reconnaissance, prospecting, and/or exploration in Forest Reserves, except in exceptional circumstances, the introduction of Operation Halt II with the mandate to decommission equipment used in illegal mining, the ban on the manufacture, sale or dealing in changfans, the introduction of mercury-free Gold Katchas, retooling of the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, introduction of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), and the training of judges to ensure strict enforcement of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995.

“Despite these measures, some nation-wreckers, motivated by their selfish interests, continue to destroy our water bodies and Forest Reserves. We are aware that what we are dealing with is money, and the cartels involved will, always, try to find ways of outwitting us. But we will not relent in our efforts, we will continue to adopt the necessary measures to protect our water bodies, environment and Forest Reserves.

“We welcome the various concerns that have been raised by several groups of people, as well as their recommendations for dealing with this matter. The President of the Republic has constituted an Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Minister for National Security, to engage all stakeholders, and to find a common ground to fight this menace. Yesterday, the Committee met with organised labour, and in the coming days, we will engage with other groups of people to ensure that we come to grips with this matter.”

The Chairperson of the Commission, Barbara Oteng-Gyasi in her remarks noted that the state-of-the-art edifice is expected to address service delivery challenges that small-scale miners within the Bibiani-Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality face as well as facilitate the monitoring and compliance role of the Commission.

Ms Barbara alluded to a number of interventions being made by the government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to sanitise and streamline mining operations, particularly in small-scale mining which includes the Community Mining Scheme, Gold Katcha among others.

Paramount Chief of Sehwi Anhwiaso Traditional area and President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, also commended the government for its effort in addressing illegal small-scale mining in the country.

He urged traditional authorities across the country to rise and help save the country’s mining resources from the harmful activities of illegal miners.

The Bibiani Minerals Commission office has become the third modernized office unveiled within the last four months.

Works are ongoing for the construction of offices in Kumasi, Tamale and Bole with expectations rife that they will be completed by November 2024.

A few weeks ago, Adom News reported that students and teachers of Bibiani Old Town went on a sit-down strike due to rampant ‘shit bombing’ in the school compound and classrooms.

Classes were suspended and schools closed as aggrieved teachers and pupils grew tired of tidying classrooms every morning before lessons.

As part of the efforts to bring that inhumane character to an end in the Bibiani community, the Sompahene of Sehwi Anhweaso traditional area, Nana D.K Korankye has constructed facilities for the suburb and other adjoining communities.

Nana Korankye commissioned a 12-seater water closet toilet facility and a mechanized borehole for the residents at an event that saw multiples in attendance.

Speaking to Adom News, Nana D. K. Korankye said it was their way of providing relief to the town he grew up residing in.

He seized the opportunity to urge benevolent persons in society to turn their attention to their communities, adding that it is a gateway to increasing their wealth.

According to the authorities, the residents have turned the school into a ‘wee base’ as they fear it could lead to explosion of infections.

With their pleas and warnings falling on deaf ears, the school authorities staged the sober protest to voice their anger.

Some students, speaking to Adom News’ Augustine Boah, said the smell from the latrines and those smeared on their marker boards, tables and chairs predisposes them to illnesses.

Another student added that in multiple times, they are forced to dispose off the fragments of cigarettes and ‘wee’ in their classrooms.

They appealed to the authorities to come to put in place stringent punishment for perpetrators.

The Assembly member of the electoral area, Abdallah Mohammed, admitted the problem and sent a firm warning to perpetrators of the act to be very careful because anyone who will be caught in the act would be used as a scapegoat.

Suspected Bibiani thief made to weed acres of land as punishment [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/suspected-bibiani-thief-made-to-weed-acres-of-land-as-punishment-video/ Wed, 22 Sep 2021 10:13:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2018515 An alleged notorious thief identified as Yaw Okyere, alias Pazito, has been busted by some residents of Bibiani-Old Town in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai municipality of the Western North region.

24-year-old Pazito’s latest attempt to steal was an unsuccessful one as he was nabbed with the jackpot gaming machine he was trying to steal.

The machine was said to have been loaded with an amount of GH¢200, all coins, which is believed to be his main target.

Sources say Okyere was used as a scapegoat and given merciless beatings by residents who say there have been rampant stealing cases in the area.

Pazito was, however, spared from being lynched and was offered to weed acres of bushy land around the community.

The assemblyman for the area, Zakari Mubarik, who rescued the suspect from being lynched told Adom News that his reign seeks to eradicate the mindset of jungle justice.

He added that a large acre was apportioned to the alleged thieve to weed, a punishment he has since undertaken.

After weeding in the scorching sun for hours, Pazito was made to rest and he was served a bowl of the meal before his release.

Mr Mubarik, explaining the intent of such a decision said most crimes are caused by poverty or lack of jobs.

Rather than treat the suspects harshly, he said he has put it before some executives to implement the communal labour agenda for suspected criminals.
