Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam of Ghana, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, to seek his blessings and support for efforts to combat corruption.
During the meeting, Mr Agyebeng appealed to the National Chief Imam to encourage Muslims across the country to actively participate in the national fight against corruption.
He stressed that combating corruption is a shared national responsibility and is essential to protecting Ghana’s future and ensuring that public resources are used for the benefit of all citizens.
The Special Prosecutor also reflected on his tenure, acknowledging that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had devoted considerable institutional attention to legal challenges concerning its mandate, independence and operations, as well as challenges to his tenure.
According to him, the OSP does not regard litigation as a setback, arguing that independent state institutions must be prepared to respond to legal challenges to their authority and operations.
He said the Office was now looking ahead with renewed focus following the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court affirming the constitutionality of the OSP Act and its prosecutorial framework.
Mr Agyebeng expressed confidence that the ruling would provide further clarity for the Office to concentrate on its core mandate of fighting corruption and corruption-related offences.
For his part, the National Chief Imam blessed the Special Prosecutor and expressed his support for efforts to combat corruption in Ghana.
Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu stressed that confronting corruption was essential to safeguarding the future of generations yet unborn.
He encouraged Mr Agyebeng to remain steadfast and committed to discharging his mandate while continuing to work towards protecting the public interest.
The Special Prosecutor was accompanied by Albert Akurugu, Director of the Asset Recovery and Management Division and Acting Director of Investigations, and Sammy Darko, Director of the Strategy, Research & Communication Division.
The courtesy call forms part of efforts by the OSP to engage key stakeholders and mobilise broader national support for the fight against corruption.
