The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a highway robbery on the Portor-Gulumpe Highway and recovered the full GH¢300,000 allegedly stolen from a businessman.
According to the Police, the robbery, which occurred on the evening of July 19, 2026, was allegedly planned by the victim’s driver, who is accused of providing information to the other suspects.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm near the Portor Police Barrier within the Kintampo Police Division.
The Police said officers stationed at the barrier responded swiftly after receiving intelligence that a robbery was underway.
Upon reaching the scene, four suspects reportedly fled into a nearby bush, while officers arrested Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, who was driving a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.
During preliminary investigations, Abdul Sadat Ali allegedly mentioned another suspect, Samad Issahaka, 24, who was driving a Kia Rhino with registration number AS 7337-23.
Police subsequently arrested Samad Issahaka, leading to further investigations that allegedly uncovered the involvement of the victim’s driver.
How the Robbery Unfolded
According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on the Portor-Gulumpe Highway, just a few meters from the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division.
Acting on intelligence that a robbery was in progress, police personnel on duty at the barrier swiftly responded and moved to the scene. Upon arrival, four suspects fled into the bush, but officers managed to arrest Abdul Sadat Ali, a 24-year-old driver of a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.
During preliminary interrogation, Abdul Sadat Ali implicated Samad Issahaka, also 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino with registration number AS 7337-23, as a member of the robbery gang. Police promptly arrested him.
The Shocking Twist: An Inside Job
Further investigations uncovered a disturbing conspiracy. Yahaya Seidu, 35, the owner of the Kia Rhino, had instructed his driver, Samad Issahaka, to convey him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Unbeknownst to the businessman, his driver knew he was carrying a large sum of money and conspired with five others to rob him on the highway.
Armed with a toy pistol, the suspects trailed the Kia Rhino and its occupants from Offinso in the Ashanti Region, caught up with them after the Portor Police Barrier, and robbed them of GHC 300,000.00 in cash.
Pursuit and Arrest of Fleeing Suspects
Police counter-terrorism personnel, together with the local police patrol team, pursued the four fleeing suspects into the bush and successfully arrested all of them. They have been identified as:
1· Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21
2· Asigri Avoka, 25
3· Awini Stephen, 19
4· Faisal Salifu, 26
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of the entire GHC 300,000.00 robbed from the victim, a major relief for the businessman who lost nothing in the end.
Suspects Confess
During interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had been tipped off by suspect Samad Issahaka, the victim’s driver, and had trailed the Kia Rhino from Offinso before executing the robbery at Portor.
All six suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
Police Commendation and Assurance
The Ghana Police Service has commended the alertness and professionalism of the personnel on duty, as well as the counter-terrorism team for their support in effecting the arrests.
Addressing the media at the Regional Command in Techiman, the Bono East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Shaibu Sadique-Osei, assured the public of the Police Service’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all persons and property within the Bono East Region.
“This was an inside job. The driver, knowing his boss was carrying that amount of money, conspired with five others to stage the robbery. They used a toy pistol, but their intent was deadly serious,” DCOP Sadique-Osei stated. “We are pleased that our men on the ground acted with speed and precision. Crime will not pay in this region.”
The Police Service has urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities, especially when traveling with significant sums of money.
