A Senior High School (SHS) graduate and ten others drowned while twenty-five others survived in the Volta Lake when a boat they were travelling in sunk on the Volta Lake.

The boat which was carrying traders from Sipom in the Eastern Region sunk after crashing into a tree stump in the Lake at Palema near Kete Krachie in the Sene East District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, a market day at Kete Krachie.

“The accident happened on their way from the Kete Krachie Market after the boat hit a tree stump, got some part broken and started sinking…45 people who were on board the boat sunk and people started swimming. 25 people survived while 11 people including an SHS leaver whose father was the boat operator…,” Birikorang from Krachie FM reported.

The navy in Krachie, according to Krachie West District Chief Executive, Douglas Osei Nti, were dispatched to the venue of the accident to help rescue the victims.

“The Navy from Krachie went there for the rescue, 11 bodies were retrieved and others rescued after three days of intensive search in the lake…,” he said.

The DCE revealed that none of the persons who were on board the boat wore a live jacket.
