The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Health Directorate in the Western North Region has recorded more than 200 dog bite cases and four rabies-related deaths between January and October this year.

The development has raised concern among health officials, who are urging residents to take dog bites seriously, seek immediate medical attention and ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies.

The Municipal Disease Control Officer, Doris Verome, says the number of dog bite cases and deaths recorded in the municipality is worrying, particularly given that rabies is preventable through timely vaccination and appropriate treatment after exposure.

Speaking to Adom News at Sefwi Ankra Muano during a sensitisation programme organised by the Health Directorate to commemorate World Rabies Day, she explained that rabies is a deadly disease that can be prevented when people take the necessary precautions.

She urged residents who are bitten by dogs to seek medical attention immediately rather than resorting to home remedies or delaying treatment.

Ms Verome also called on dog owners to vaccinate their pets regularly and ensure they are properly cared for, stressing that responsible pet ownership remains critical to preventing rabies infections and deaths.

She further encouraged residents to be cautious around unfamiliar or stray dogs and to report suspected cases to the appropriate health or veterinary authorities.

Residents who participated in the sensitisation programme welcomed the initiative, saying the education had improved their understanding of rabies, its dangers and the risks associated with dog bites.

They pledged to vaccinate their pets and adopt better practices in caring for their dogs to help protect their families and the wider community from the disease.
