More than 1,800 delegates and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency have threatened to abandon the party if the national leadership fails to allow the constituency elections to be held as scheduled on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The delegates, who expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in organising the elections, accused the national party leadership of contributing to divisions within the constituency.
At a press conference in Ajumako, the leader of the delegates and supporters, Lawrence Abiate, called on the NPP national leadership to investigate the circumstances surrounding the delays and sanction party officials found culpable of creating disunity in the constituency.
He said the party’s inability to resolve the issues surrounding the constituency elections had created frustration among delegates and supporters.
According to Mr Abiate, the constituency-level elections have been characterised by petitions and legal disputes, which he said could be resolved by applying the party’s constitution and election guidelines.
He expressed concern that some party officials responsible for resolving the disputes had allegedly failed to rely on the party’s rules to address the challenges.
“We have observed with the utmost shock that some party officials tasked to dispose of these bottlenecks, instead of using the rulebook, are either unwilling to do so for whatever reasons best known to them or are complicit in putting these barriers in the way of the party,” he said.
The delegates warned that failure by the national leadership to resolve the impasse and permit the elections to proceed could trigger a mass withdrawal from the party and its activities.
They claimed that Ebenezer Rbo Quansah Eghan, one of the aspirants, has the backing of about 1,200 delegates and more than 18,000 party faithful and sympathisers, who they said could reconsider their continued involvement with the NPP.
The delegates also called for disciplinary action against any party officials found to have deliberately contributed to the disagreements affecting the constituency.
Some of the delegates who spoke at the press conference expressed disappointment over the continued postponement of the elections and appealed to the national leadership to intervene urgently.
They maintained that conducting the elections in accordance with the party’s constitution and guidelines was necessary to restore unity and confidence among members in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency.
