President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, has welcomed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to make National Service optional if elected President.
But, he said government needs to create more jobs if it wants graduates to find employment after school.
The Vice President, while addressing the nation on his vision on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, pledged to make National Service optional for graduates who seek immediate employment after completing tertiary education.
He believes the current National Service Scheme (NSS) needs adjustments to align with job demands.
This statement has sparked outrage, with some critics suggesting it may foster corruption.
But Mr. Oppong Kyeremeh on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme backed the proposal.
He indicated that, because National Service is compulsory, graduates miss juicy job opportunities.
The NUGS President said making NSS optional would benefit experienced students who could enter the job market immediately after graduation.
“We all know that because NSS is mandatory, some students lose job opportunities so we believe its a good call and will help the students to get job offers right after school” he said.
