The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the government over the recurring flooding in parts of Accra, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of failing to implement effective flood control measures.
In a press release issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the NPP expressed sympathy to thousands of Ghanaians affected by the floods but said the government’s response has been inadequate.
The party described the latest flooding as “a recurring June 3 moment,” noting that communities including the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange were inundated following heavy rains.
According to the NPP, these areas have repeatedly experienced flooding over the years, yet little has been done to permanently address the problem.
The opposition party accused the government of creating confusion in the management of flood-related issues by dividing responsibility between the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
It argued that the arrangement has led to overlapping responsibilities and ineffective coordination, alleging that the two ministries are competing for authority instead of working together to tackle the flooding challenge.
The NPP also questioned President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to assign Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe to coordinate anti-flood interventions, arguing that he lacks the ministerial authority to direct government ministries in a national disaster response.
The party further claimed that several anti-flood interventions announced by the government have either not been implemented or have been poorly executed.
It also alleged that delays by the Ministry of Finance in releasing funds for flood mitigation projects have slowed efforts to address the problem.
The NPP maintained that the government’s “reset agenda” has weakened the country’s flood management system and called on the administration to stop what it described as public relations exercises and instead focus on implementing practical and lasting solutions.
The party also took issue with recent comments by President Mahama in London, where he reportedly attributed part of the flooding problem to indiscipline and poor environmental practices among citizens.
The NPP urged the government to demonstrate greater urgency in tackling the country’s perennial flooding and to prioritise effective coordination, adequate funding and the implementation of long-term flood control measures.
