Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has increased from 57 per cent to about 70 per cent in less than two years.

He attributed the growth to measures introduced by the government to strengthen the scheme, including the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy to increase funding.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s Sector Update Engagement in Accra on Wednesday, October 7, Mr Akandoh said the additional resources had improved the financial capacity of the NHIS.

“We’re strengthening what we have come to meet. We took the NHIS from 57%; as I speak to you now, it’s about 70%. In a matter of less than two years,” he said.

The Minister said funding for the scheme had also increased significantly, rising from about GH¢6.5 billion in 2024 to GH¢9.8 billion in 2025.

He explained that the increased funding had enabled government to raise payments to healthcare providers by an average of 50 per cent.

According to Mr Akandoh, the adjustment was aimed at reducing delays in settling claims owed to healthcare facilities and ensuring providers have the resources to continue serving NHIS beneficiaries.

He said improving the financial position of the scheme and ensuring timely payments to service providers were essential to maintaining the quality and accessibility of healthcare.

Mr Akandoh maintained that the interventions formed part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen the NHIS and make healthcare more accessible to Ghanaians without placing unnecessary financial burdens on beneficiaries.
