The Volta Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority, Susan Chobbah, has raised concerns over illegal fees being charged to NHIA cardholders at some health facilities, warning that the practice is discouraging enrolment and renewal across the region.

Speaking in an interview during the NHIA 2025 Annual Performance Review Meeting in Ho, she described the situation as a major setback to efforts aimed at expanding access to healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

According to her, despite the challenge, the Volta Region recorded strong performance in 2025, achieving over 100 percent of its enrolment target for active membership.

However, she stressed that unauthorised charges continue to erode public trust in the scheme and risk reversing the gains made in increasing coverage.

Madam Chobbah therefore called on health facilities to strictly adhere to NHIA guidelines and desist from imposing illegal fees on insured clients.

She commended district and municipal NHIA officers for their efforts in driving enrolment and supporting the Authority’s goal of delivering accessible and affordable healthcare.

The Regional Director also urged residents who are yet to join the scheme to take advantage of the ongoing free registration exercise, which runs until May 31, 2026, at NHIA offices nationwide or via the shortcode *929#.

She reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage and improving healthcare delivery across the country.
