The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a flood alert to residents living along the White Volta River and other flood-prone communities in the North East Region ahead of the planned spillage of Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam.
According to the organisation, authorities in Burkina Faso have officially informed Ghana that the annual controlled spillage of the dam is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
NADMO warned that the exercise is expected to increase water levels in the White Volta River and its tributaries, raising the risk of flooding in communities situated along riverbanks and other low-lying areas.
In a statement, the organisation urged residents, particularly those living in vulnerable communities, to take immediate precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
It advised households in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds before floodwaters begin to rise and encouraged farmers to harvest mature crops early where necessary to minimise losses.
NADMO also cautioned farmers, fishermen, herdsmen and the general public against farming, fishing, grazing livestock or engaging in any other activities within river channels and floodplains during the spillage period.
Residents were further advised to move valuables, food supplies, livestock and farming equipment to safer locations and to avoid attempting to cross flooded roads, rivers, streams or bridges.
The organisation said its North East Regional Office has directed all district offices to intensify public education and awareness campaigns, especially in communities along the White Volta and other waterways likely to be affected.
NADMO assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates as the controlled spillage of the Bagre Dam progresses.
