President John Dramani Mahama has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing him as more than a colleague in government but a trusted friend, loyal adviser and younger brother whose unwavering support remained constant throughout his political career.
Speaking at the unveiling of a cenotaph in honour of the late minister at the Ministry of Defence on Thursday, August 6, President Mahama reflected on their close relationship, saying Dr Omane Boamah stood by him during some of the most significant moments of his political journey.
The ceremony followed a National Interfaith Memorial Service held earlier at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where political leaders, members of the Ghana Armed Forces, diplomats, religious leaders, family members and friends gathered to commemorate the lives of the eight victims of the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.
Delivering his tribute, President Mahama described Dr Omane Boamah as one of the most dependable people he had ever worked with.
“He was a friend, a younger brother, a loyalist and a close adviser. His loyalty and love for me was undoubted,” the President said.
He recalled that the late minister remained steadfast in his support throughout both the successes and challenges of his political career, offering wise counsel and unwavering encouragement.
“He stood by my side through all the momentous occasions of my political career,” he added.
President Mahama said Dr Omane Boamah’s loyalty was rooted not in personal ambition but in a genuine commitment to public service and the development of Ghana.
He further described the late Defence Minister as a man of exceptional character whose humility, compassion and dedication distinguished him in public life.
“Omane was a great human being. His kind is difficult to find in our world today,” he said.
According to the President, Dr Omane Boamah consistently demonstrated integrity, professionalism and kindness in his dealings with colleagues, members of the security services and the public, earning admiration across political divides.
President Mahama also commended the Ghana Armed Forces for organising the ceremonial honours in recognition of the late minister’s service to the nation.
“I thank the Ghana Armed Forces for the honour being done for our former Minister today,” he said.
He described the unveiling of the cenotaph as a fitting tribute to a leader who dedicated his life to strengthening Ghana’s defence institutions and safeguarding national peace and security.
The President noted that Dr Omane Boamah occupies a unique place in Ghana’s history as the only Defence Minister to have died while serving in office.
“The only Defence Minister on record to have died in active service,” he stated.
President Mahama said the late minister’s passing represents not only a profound personal loss but also a significant loss to the nation, stressing the importance of preserving his legacy for future generations.
