Mothers’ Day blood donation exercise held in Tema has been described as successful as it exceeded the expectation of organizers.

The donation exercise was organized by Adom FM, Rahpal Medical Centre and National Blood Service, Tema General Hospital with support from some organizations as part of the Mothers’ Day celebrations.

Though organizers were expecting residents to patronize it, attendance was beyond expectation as over 200 residents donated pints of blood to help save women during childbirth, accident victims, cancer patients among others who might be in dire need of blood.

The event which started around 8:00 am Saturday, saw children and adults trooping to the Chemu park at Community 7, Tema to contribute their quota to saving others.

One factor that hampers success of blood donation is the misconception Ghanaians have attached to this exercise since some do not know is what happens to blood after it has been donated.

Chief Executive Officer of Raphal Medical Centre, Dr. Johnson Addo has dispelled the misconception about blood donation.

“Attaching negative perception to blood donation will discourage people from giving blood to save lives”, he said.

Meanwhile, Senior Blood Donor Officer, Southern Area Blood, Stephen Danso debunked the notion that blood is sold at a high cost to those who need it.

The blood donation was graced by performances from Article Wan, Dadie Opanka, Cwesi Oteng among others.

The artistes saw performing at this event as a means of drawing people’s attention to the need to donate blood to save others who it.

Hundreds of residents who took part also enjoyed free health screening.
