The Minority in Parliament has hinted on plans to drag the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye to address Members of Parliament on the diversion of pre-mix fuel in the country as reported by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs in Parliament, the matter is a national concern which plans are far advanced to drag the minister on the matter.
Ranking member on the Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament, Eric Opoku said invitation by the minority for the minister to brief members on the Agric committee or the main chamber of Parliament is part of the options they’re considering as a group.
The Asunafo South legislature told host of Adom FM’s Burning Issues program, Agya Abraham on reports of diversion of premix fuel to fishermen across the coastal areas.
Reports suggests that there have been at least 200 cases of premix fuel diversions in the country since the NPP government assumed office from January to October 2017, costing the country millions of Ghana cedis.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) in series of letters dated between January and October 2017, informed the National Pre-mix fuel Committee and the Fisheries Ministry to take action against some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) that are involved in the diversion of the product meant for fisher-folk in the country’s coastal communities.
The OMCs, according to the letter, took supply of the pre-mix fuel at the Tema Oil Refinery supposedly to be supplied to fishing communities outside Accra, however, they ended up supplying them within Accra often to industries.
But Hon. Eric Opoku said he is surprised that the NPA together with the National Pre-mix fuel Committee and the Fisheries Ministry have failed to act upon their findings on the matter.
However he said, the minority as a group will address the press with it findings in the issues relating the diversion of premix fuel products on the market.
