Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee and Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has urged Ghanaians to treat any new promises announced in the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review with caution.
He argued that the government lacks the financial capacity to implement additional commitments.
According to him, the government’s current fiscal situation does not support the introduction of new programmes, as it is already struggling to finance existing commitments.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said any fresh pledges in the budget review would be unrealistic.
“Any new promise made at the mid-year budget review is an unfounded promise. No one should take it seriously. There is no money to work with,” he stated.
The former Information Minister argued that government revenue has fallen below expectations, making it difficult to fund projects that have already been approved.
“The programmes that are already funded do not even have the money required for implementation. Revenue has gone down by about 4.7 per cent. It is already underperforming,” he said.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further alleged that the government had resorted to cutting expenditure in an effort to maintain a primary fiscal surplus.
“To create the impression that the economy is performing well, they have cut expenditure by about 13.8 per cent just to achieve a primary surplus,” he claimed.
His comments come ahead of the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, where the Finance Minister is expected to update Parliament on the performance of the economy and outline the government’s fiscal outlook for the remainder of the year.
