Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Mrs Barbara Asher Ayisi, has bemoaned the increasing teenage pregnancy cases in the country.

She said she thought with the advancement in technology and the inclusion of sex education in the education curricula, it would have reduced but the reverse is rather the case.

Mrs Ayisi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, was reacting to recent reports about increase teenage pregnancy cases especially at the primary and junior high school levels.

The situation, very prevalent in the Central, Brong Ahafo and Eastern regions, is said to be affecting the education of young girls in the area.

Commenting on the development, Hon. Ayisi expressed shock at the high teenage pregnancy and adolescent childbearing rates.

She could not fathom why very young girls in primary school still under their parents care are able to have premarital sex.

Citing herself as an example, the Deputy Works and Housing Minister said even in Senior High School (SHS), she was still a virgin though her mother was a single parent.

“A lot of us, even at the secondary school, we were virgins,” she said on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Thursday.

On the way forward, Hon. Ayisi called on parents to take an active role in educating adolescent children on reproductive health.
