Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, Asamoah Gyan, has given an insight into what he really went through after losing the Black Stars captaincy armband to Andre Ayew.
Gyan, 33, was stripped off the role few weeks before the start of the continental showpiece in Egypt this year.
Though he was not cool with the decision, the President of the land, Nana Akufo-Addo, intervened to rescind his decision to retire from the national team.
Speaking on the Ultimate Sports morning show on Asempa FM, the Kayserispor striker revealed that he felt hurt and betrayed over the decision of Coach James Kwesi Appiah.
“I felt betrayed and felt disappointed. I don’t have any problem with him [Kwesi Appiah.] I won’t lie to you, I felt extremely hurt,” he told Asempa FM.
“I felt pain in my heart. I will say the coach did not do well. He took his decision but how he went about it was wrong, to be honest.
“I am only human. Nobody can tell me he will be happy over such a decision. If you put yourself in my shoes, you will understand.I am not the first person to be stripped of the armband. But, mostly it happens when one has been embroiled in a scandal. Take the John Terry example.
“I was talked to by the President of Ghana and other senior statesmen to see the larger picture and life. And I took everything in my stride. I have no problem with the coach. We are very cool and we look forward to the future,” he added.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
He is Africa’s top-scorer in the history of the World Cup with six goals.
