The Krowor Municipal Assembly has dismissed reports circulating on social media that property owners aged 70 years and above are exempt from paying property rates, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a public notice, the Assembly clarified that the misinformation incorrectly references the repealed Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), which has since been replaced by the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
According to the Assembly, Section 149(2) of Act 936 relates only to exemptions from the payment of the basic rate and not property rates.
It explained that under the law, persons under 18 years and those above 70 years are exempt from paying the basic rate. However, there is no provision in the Act that exempts property owners from paying property rates based on age.
The Assembly stressed that all eligible property owners remain legally obligated to pay property rates regardless of their age.

It therefore urged residents, property owners and businesses within the municipality to disregard the false information and comply with their statutory obligations.
The Assembly also thanked residents for their continued cooperation and support in revenue mobilisation efforts aimed at improving service delivery and development within the municipality.
