The Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana (KAMOG) has rejected reports surrounding the alleged shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, describing some accounts circulating in the media as misleading and inaccurate.

In a press statement issued on June 25, the church said it was concerned about what it described as misinformation, fabrication and distortion of facts following the installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the new leader of the Mission.

According to the church, the installation ceremony, held on Sunday, June 21, was organised by the National Council of Elders and the Head Office in accordance with the church’s constitution and followed extensive consultations.

The Mission stated that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena was successfully introduced and installed as the successor to the late Apostle Prof. Emeritus Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

The church explained that after the ceremony ended, the newly installed leader left his residence to attend another engagement.

It alleged that after his departure, a black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicle arrived at the premises and rammed into the metallic gate three times in the presence of some church members who had remained at the venue.

The Mission said it later learnt through media reports and social media that Sarah Adwoa Safo had allegedly been shot by unidentified security personnel.

KAMOG, however, denied claims that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena was involved in the incident.

“We wish to categorically state that our newly installed leader, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, was not physically present at his house when the incident occurred and did not personally shoot or instruct anybody to shoot his sister, Hon. Adwoa Safo,” the statement said.

The church confirmed that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena honoured an invitation by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, June 22, accompanied by his lawyers, and provided a statement to investigators.

According to the statement, he was subsequently arraigned before the Adenta Circuit Court and granted bail on June 23.

The Mission also clarified that the seven security personnel arrested in connection with the incident were employees of Kantanka Security Services Limited, a registered private security company, and not members of a vigilante group as had been alleged in some media reports.

It noted that firearms and ammunition retrieved from the security personnel belonged to the company, whose licence was later suspended by the Interior Minister.

The church leadership pledged its full cooperation with the police and other security agencies investigating the matter.

It said the Mission remains committed to uncovering the truth behind the incident and protecting the reputation of the church, which it noted has existed for more than five decades without any association with violence.

KAMOG further assured its members and the public that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena remains the duly installed leader of the church and will continue to be recognised in that capacity.

The church added that it is exploring internal dispute resolution mechanisms provided under its constitution to address issues arising from what it described as a family and religious dispute.

The statement concluded with the church leadership congratulating Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena on his installation and pledging its support towards advancing the vision and legacy of the late Apostle Prof. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
